On Monday 27 Nov our Soroptimist\u00a0women’s group, Violence Against Women Team hosted an event at the Maltings Theatre St Albans – please scroll through the pictures here for a flavour of this fascinating evening if you missed it. Dr Emma Short demonstrated clearly her expertise on the field of cyberstalking (see below for more information about Emma and the content of her presentation). Cyberstalking is a\u00a0crime against (mostly) women and must\u00a0be taken more seriously because it wrecks lives. Awareness raising is essential and this event is part of that process. Emma presented some fascinating and scary information and the audience listened intently. She advised everyone to take up the advice from Get Safe Online\u00a0<\/span>www.getsafeonline.org<\/a>\u00a0– there are some simple steps we can all take to be safer on-line. Emma was delighted with the\u00a0great\u00a0quality questions from the strong\u00a0St Albans\u00a0audience.\u00a0There are events like this\u00a0taking place all over the world for the\u00a0“16 Days of Activism to end gender based violence against women”.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This event marked the\u00a016 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence\u00a0<\/a>from 25 November\u00a0International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women\u00a0<\/span><\/a>to 10 December,\u00a0Human Rights Day<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

This fascinating talk explained the hidden harm caused by the targeted intrusion through online means and gave insights into the types of behaviour associated with most risk. It also set out the need for change and steps that we can all take to create a safer environment in cyberspace.<\/p>\n

Speaker Biography:<\/strong>\u00a0Dr Emma Short (pictured here) is a Reader in Cyberpsychology and is based at the University of Bedfordshire. She is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS). As Director of the National Centre for Cyberstalking Research (NCCR) she is a researcher in online behaviour, and currently leading a Home Office funded project designed to improve capabilities in the police response to cyber harassment and cyberstalking. Emma’s research has identified that the impact of sustained online threat which characterises cyberstalking, poses significant risk, with many victims reporting clinical levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She is a regular contributor to press and broadcast media in these areas.<\/p>\n
