{"id":7414,"date":"2021-06-16T11:31:14","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T10:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/?p=7414"},"modified":"2021-06-20T19:41:55","modified_gmt":"2021-06-20T18:41:55","slug":"plastic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/2021\/plastic\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspired by Carers in Herts and Plastic Free July at the June Club Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We had a busy and inspiring Club Meeting on the 14th June &#8211; with guest speaker <strong>Roma Mills from Carers in Herts <\/strong>and<strong>Helen Byrne<\/strong>&#8216;s presentation \u00a0about<strong> \u201cPlastic Free July\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/cinh_logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7421 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/cinh_logo.jpg\" alt=\"Carers in Herts Logo\" width=\"250\" height=\"92\" \/><\/a>Club President Barbara Saunders OBE was delighted to start the meeting by welcoming <strong>Roma Mills from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carersinherts.org.uk\/\">Carers in Herts <\/a><\/strong>Roma is an old friend of the Club who works tirelessly <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/49-Roma-Mills-Carers-in-Herts-Presentation.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7418\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/49-Roma-Mills-Carers-in-Herts-Presentation-300x200.png\" alt=\"Roma Mills Carers in Herts Presentation\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/49-Roma-Mills-Carers-in-Herts-Presentation-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/49-Roma-Mills-Carers-in-Herts-Presentation.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>to help those in need in of support in our community.\u00a0 Roma was invited to update us on the work of the charity &#8211; particularly how it has supported carers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please click here to view Roma&#8217;s presentation\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/Carers-in-Herts-Pres-Soroptimist-St-Albans-14-Jun.pdf\">Carers in Herts Pres Soroptimist St Albans 14 Jun<\/a><\/p>\n<p>it is packed full of information and she also added a lot of personal insight on the night.<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/50-Roma-Mills-Carers-in-Herts-Presentation.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7419 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/50-Roma-Mills-Carers-in-Herts-Presentation-300x200.png\" alt=\"Roma Mills Carers in Herts Presentation\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/50-Roma-Mills-Carers-in-Herts-Presentation-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/sigbi.org\/st-albans-and-district\/files\/50-Roma-Mills-Carers-in-Herts-Presentation.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Carers UK <\/b>surveyed over 5,000 carers in April 2020 showing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>70% carers were providing an average of 10 hours <i>more<\/i> care per week due to COVID<\/li>\n<li>Over a third (35%) because local services had reduced or closed<\/li>\n<li>4.5million people had taken on a caring role since the COVID pandemic started<\/li>\n<li>4 in 5 carers were providing more care than before lockdown.<\/li>\n<li>78% of carers reported that the needs of the person they care for have increased recently.<\/li>\n<li>64% of carers have not been able to take any breaks at all in the last six months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There was so much information in Roma&#8217;s presentation everyone was left without a question to ask &#8211; it is very unusual for Soroptimists not to have anything to say!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Helen Byrne, Facilitator of the Club&#8217;s Planet Team<\/strong> then delivered an excellent presentation about<strong> \u201cPlastic Free July\u201d<\/strong> to coincide with <strong>World Oceans Day 8 June<\/strong>. So the Club\u2019s \u00a0Planet Team are working to make Members aware of these challenges and how to be part of the solution.<\/p>\n<p>Helen started by explaining about <strong>\u201cCOP 26\u201d<\/strong> which is in the news at the moment \u2013 it means \u201c26<sup>th<\/sup> Conference of the Parties\u201d because it is the 26<sup>th<\/sup> Global UN Summit to find and implement solutions to Climate Change. This year it is crucial because the Climate Crisis is getting out of control and it is being chaired by the UK Government in partnership with Italy. The Club\u2019s Planet Team will keep us informed as we can and \u00a0we will be having a speaker in September and we can view the <strong>UKCOP26<\/strong> website to find out more <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/\">ukcop26.org <\/a><\/strong>Helen reminded us that <strong>COP26<\/strong> is only focused on<strong> Climate Change<\/strong> not <strong>Reduction in Biodiversity or Plastic Pollution<\/strong> (although there is some overlap) and we also need the post pandemic world and these climate change solution to involve and support everyone so we can <strong>BUILD BACK BETTER &amp; EQUAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Helen then went on to define the <strong>\u201cPlastic Crisis\u201d<\/strong> and encourage Members to take on the Plastic Free July Challenge. She showed us the first 4.38 minutes of this hard-hitting video Plastic Oceans<strong> <u><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ju_2NuK5O-E\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/ju_2NuK5O-E<\/a><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Plastic Free July\u00ae<\/strong> is a global movement based in Australia that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic \u2013 we watched the 1 minute Video Plastic Free July <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UnXVU-06ciI\"><u>https:\/\/youtu.be\/UnXVU-06ciI<\/u>\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>WHAT CAN WE DO?<\/strong> Get inspired using the resources on the Plastic Free July website \u2013 <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticfreejuly.org\/get-involved\/what-you-can-do\/category\/getting-started\/#categories\">https:\/\/www.plasticfreejuly.org\/get-involved\/what-you-can-do\/category\/getting-started\/#categories<\/a><\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>Accept the Challenge\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plasticfreejuly.org\/take-the-challenge\/\">https:\/\/www.plasticfreejuly.org\/take-the-challenge\/<\/a><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During Plastic Free July I will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid single-use plastic packaging<\/li>\n<li>Target takeaway items (the Top 4: bags, bottles, straws and coffee cups)<\/li>\n<li>Go completely plastic-free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you sign up to the Challenge You sign up to one of these 3 categories and commit to joining for a day, a week or for the whole of July.<\/p>\n<p>After Helen\u2019s presentation we split into Breakout Groups and attempted to answer these questions in the short time available:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What plastics have you already cut out and how?<\/li>\n<li>What are you struggling to find alternatives to?<\/li>\n<li>Are you interested in working on reducing your plastic even more and taking the Plastic Free Challenge?
