SISTA Sep 2021 Step Up to COP26 Whilst Stepping Down Carbon Footprints<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

There were 28 people on the Zoom call learning what COP26<\/strong> is and what role it could and should play in helping women reduce their own, their community and the planet\u2019s carbon emissions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A few notes to help with the background and jargon in the presentation:\u00a0 COP = UN Conference of Parties \u2013 annual event<\/strong>;\u00a02015 Paris COP21<\/strong>;\u00a02020 Glasgow COP26<\/strong> (delayed to 2021 due to COVID with a pre-COP meeting in Italy);\u00a0 COP purpose is for global negotiations towards agreements and declarations;\u00a0 Former Energy Minister Claire Perry<\/strong> was appointed as Interim COP26 President, <\/strong>now Alok Sharma <\/strong>; \u2018Powering past coal\u2019 alliance of LG\/national\/businesses committed to phasing out unabated coal power;\u00a0 \u2018Clean growth\u2019 strategy to decarbonise UK economy.<\/p>\n

We split into breakout groups for 15 minutes and discussed:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. What might get in your way of achieving a step? <\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. How can women as decision-makers in the home and elsewhere influence achieving that step? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The breakout groups were encouraged to focus on these 5 categories:<\/p>\n

    Travel<\/strong> \u2013 fly less, drive electric, walk\/cycle more<\/p>\n

    Home<\/strong> \u2013 insulate, switch energy, get solar, dial it down<\/p>\n

    Voice<\/strong> \u2013 MP, employer\/colleagues, friends\/family<\/p>\n

    Food<\/strong> \u2013 cut waste, plant-based, seasonal<\/p>\n

    Lifestyle<\/strong> \u2013 money, repair\/re-use, clothes to last<\/p>\n

    The feedback from the groups will be written up and included here soon.<\/p>\n

    Everyone who attended learned more about the current environmental challenge and the need for Britain to step up to lead through COP26.\u00a0 We were all encouraged to make 16 lifestyle changes<\/span>\u00a0with the Count Us In campaign\u00a0www.count-us-in.org<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and to get involved through St Albans Climate Action Network<\/strong> \u2013www.sustainablestalbans.org\/st-albans-climate-action-network<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n
