“Peace” on\u00a0a bridge in St Albans:\u00a0Soroptimist International St Albans & District, held an inspirational <\/strong>“<\/em>Join Women on the Bridge\u201d<\/em> event to mark International Women\u2019s Day on Mother’s Day. <\/strong>The crowds gathered bridge over the boating lake\u00a0Verulamium Park in spite of the cold, w<\/strong>earing white, making a “S<\/strong>tand for Peace and to <\/strong>End Violence Against Women and Girls”.<\/strong><\/p>\n

New Testament Church Choir from Fleetville sang “One Day at a time” from the bridge to set the mood.<\/p>\n

Helen Byrne President of Soroptimist International St Albans & District welcomed everyone – including the Mayor of St Albans, Councillor Eileen Harris<\/p>\n

Jane Slatter, Soroptimist International Great Britain & Ireland Director of Communications spoke about why we were having\u00a0 the “Join Women on the Bridge”<\/strong> event in St Albans – making a stand for peace and an end to violence against women<\/strong>. There have been many atrocities recently against women: the shooting of Malala<\/a> the outspoken 14 year old student and campaigner in Pakistan – the murder of polio vaccination workers Pakistan<\/a> and Nigeria, the rape and murder of the young woman in India<\/a>\u00a0“Violence Against Women – Stop it Now” is a Flagship Project for Soroptimists – see www.soroptimist-ukpac.org\/about\/show\/336\/<\/a>\u00a0 and download the leaflet here: VAWleaflet<\/a>\u00a0This Club has supported the local women’s refuge<\/a> for many years. As a sign of peace<\/strong>, people wore white. The bridge symbolises people joining together united in a common cause. Ban Ki Moon the UN Secretary General has said: <\/em>\u201c<\/strong>Violence against women must never be accepted, never excused, never tolerated\u201d. <\/em><\/p>\n

The Mayor of St Albans, Councillor Eileen Harris attended in spite of feeling unwell and gave a\u00a0speech with a personal perspective in support\u00a0of International Women’s Day. She said that although much progress had been made in the UK towards women’s rights and equality, there was still much to be done. She admired the work of Soroptimists and organisations like the St Albans & Hertsmere Women’s Refuge<\/a> who had a special 4 legged guest on the bridge ! The mayor was presented with a white heather plant by Emily Taylor – this plant represents\u00a0peace and protection from danger.<\/p>\n

There was coffee, networking and a welcome warm up afterwards at the nearby Inn on the Park Caf\u00e9 www.inn-on-the-park.com<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Across the world thousands of\u00a0Soroptimists<\/strong> marked the 102nd anniversary<\/strong> of\u00a0International Women\u2019s Day<\/strong> with hundreds of activities and events on and around 8 March.<\/p>\n
