August 2023 News<\/strong><\/p>\n

St Austell & District Soroptimists had a great afternoon at Boconnoc House Open Garden’s Event on 13th August. Despite a few showers, we kept smiling, as we served cream teas, sold homemade cakes and shared lots of treasures with visitors to the gardens. All of the money raised was for Cornwall Hospice Care and we raised a whopping \u00a31,400.00.\u00a0 A big thank you to everyone who helped and gave generously today!!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>This was the\u00a0 month that our amazing England women’s football team made it to the final of the World Cup. We were immensely proud of this achievement and even though they didn’t win, we recognise that being 2nd in the world is still AMAZING!! This team are such an inspiration to girls across the world.<\/p>\n

On 25th August we held our second Orange Cafe and we had a great turn out. Why are we doing it?<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
The UNiTE campaign has proclaimed the 25th of each month as \u201cOrange Day\u201d, a day to raise awareness and take action to end violence against women and girls. As a bright and optimistic colour, orange represents a future free from violence against women and girls. Orange Day calls upon activists, to mobilize people and highlight issues relevant to preventing and ending violence against women and girls, not only once a year on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, but every month.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Soroptimists Jane and Karen were part of the organising team for\u00a0 the Cornwall Air Ambulance fundraising event at The Cornwall Hotel & Spa 0n 27th August. A big well done to Karen and Jane for their dedicated support of this charity. Club members Pat and Jennie went along to support this event and eat cream teas!<\/div>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Soroptimists Mary and Liz took a food delivery to Penryn and Falmouth Foodbank in August . The food was bought with St Austell & District club donations as part of our annual contribution to the foodbanks in the area. The club then received a lovely letter from Lucy at the Foodbank thanking us for our kind donation and telling us how busy they are supporting people in need. This foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust’s network of over 1,200 foodbanks working to tackle food poverty and hunger in our local communities, as well as across the U.K.<\/div>\n

During the entire month of August Soroptimist Jennie walked 2 miles every day to complete the ‘Refuge Challenge’. Refuge is the country’s largest provider of specialist support for women and children who experience domestic abuse and other forms of gender based violence. Whatever the weather she was out and about and managed to raise a grand total of \u00a3600.00 for this worthy cause. Thanks to everyone who supported her.<\/p>\n
