This year S.I. Stockton on Tees are supporting a local charity called Blind Voice. The Blind Voice mission is to ‘enable people who are blind or partially sighted achieve their full potential and integration in society’. With this in mind the club ‘kick started’ its year by planning a Treasure Hunt (yes in cars!) followed by a home cooked supper. Members and families collected members of blind voice and shared cars with them. We had instructions printed in Braille too to ensure total participation by all. The hunt planner also asked people to collect tactile objects to bring back and when they all returned they were given a ‘smell test’. It was a fabulous day, which forged friendships and a great time was had by all (£400+ raised). People who are blind often live a solitary life, which affects their overall fitness and general well being. Being blind limits their ability to buy and cook healthy food. Both of these factors lead to unhealthy lifestyles causing either weight gain or nutritional deficits. It is intended that throughout this year we shall work in partnership with members of Blind Voice. They will attend our functions and we shall benefit by accessing their awareness sessions making our fund raising year an all round positive experience whilst providing funds to enable them to provide their own awareness, advocacy and actions.
