The Meserani Project – Tuesday 10th May

The Meserani Project – Tuesday 10th May

Peter and Diane Swan came to update us on this very important project. Acklam Grange School, where Peter teaches, support young people in Tanzania, enabling them to follow and complete their secondary education. The youngsters cannot afford the several hundred pounds for school fees. Girls are particularly disadvantaged. Not only do they raise funds for buildings, books and equipment but also give them sweatshirts bearing the Acklam Grange logo, which the Tanzanian youngsters wear with pride. We had a spontaneous collection totalling £75.50 plus, a couple of weeks later another £100, which I will report on in the African day write up.

Bluebell Walk – Sunday 8th May

Bluebell Walk – Sunday 8th May

A mix of members, friends, family and SoroptiMISTERS! Met on this beautiful afternoon to stroll around the periphery of Rosebery Topping. It was purely recreation. No fundraising, no speakers ( but plenty of chatterers!). Spring had arrived early, there were doubts that the bluebells would last. We needn’t have worried they were in their prime. A very enjoyable afternoon.

We spent a couple of hours in the company of Jessie Jo the CEO of ‘The Gate- A Way Out’. She explained how an encounter with some young people who had been forced into a life on the streets and in some cases, prostitution, contrasted with the lives of youngsters the same age that she knew, made her determined to provide a way out. Taking a Business degree gave her the knowledge and confidence to make her vision a reality Everything is coming to fruition. With our collaboration, things will continue to improve. Parkinson’s The Future – Thursday 26th May

Parkinson’s The Future – Thursday 26th May

Originally this involved two eminent Professors, one from King’s College, London, the other from North Tyneside Hospital. The venue was Queen’s Campus, Stockton, of Durham University. Through the goodwill of the Dean of Medicine, Pali Hungin. Due to circumstances beyond our control, Peter Jenner from KCL, was unable to attend. The good news was that Dr Deepta Churm from North Tyneside, a colleague of Professor Richard Walker, was able to come and update us on Advance Care Planning. Something we all have to consider eventually. Jackie Burke from Parkinson’s UK demonstrated how all the ideas suggested by Richard Walker and Deepta, could be put into practice by PWP’S, with support. Although only 46 people attended, we raised £276 for research.

On Saturday 4th June we enjoyed an African Theme Day at Connie Clarke’s house. With her ‘Open House ‘ policy, Connie was on top form-telling and re-telling the anecdotes and legends behind the artefacts. In addition she provided lunch for a dozen of us1 She was rushing to and fro meeting people,s needs. At the end we collected a spontaneous donation(filling in the tin) Connie, typically , gave it to us as a down payment towards funding a student throughout secondary education. The Cheque for £100 has been sent to Peter Swan. MANY, MANY, MANY THANKS TO CONNIE AND IAN (A true soroptimister) A wonderful day in my year! Truly memorable. A huge thank you to all those who attended. President Sandra

A Treasure Hunt Gave Us a Day to Treasure

This year S.I. Stockton on Tees are supporting a local charity called Blind Voice.  The Blind Voice mission is to ‘enable people who are blind or partially sighted achieve their full potential and integration in society’.  With this in mind the club ‘kick started’ its year by planning a Treasure Hunt (yes in cars!) followed by a home cooked supper.  Members and families collected members of blind voice and shared cars with them.  We had instructions printed in Braille too to ensure total participation by all.  The hunt planner also asked people to collect tactile objects to bring back and when they all returned they were given a ‘smell test’.  It was a fabulous day, which forged friendships and a great time was had by all (£400+ raised).  People who are blind often live a solitary life, which affects their overall fitness and general well

Sandra Jones (Vice President) ran the Middlesbrough 10k and raised £105 for the Butterwick Hospice despite having Parkinson’s Disease.  Out of 5000 taking part she came in at 2499.  Sandra lives for the moment and crams as much as she can into her very busy life.  She says she ‘adapts but never surrenders’ and doesn’t let Parkinson’s ‘define’ her.  Sandra has a great sense of humour and claims to be ‘one of the movers and shakers’ whist the children she teaches call her Mrs Wobble the Waitress.  Next year she will not be running alone but will be joined by other members of the club.
