Celebrating International Women&#8217;s Day<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<section id=\"86100\" class=\"paragraph--section--basic-text-image\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-12 offset-0 col-md-8 offset-md-2\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--basic-text-image paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>\u00a0Here are five key areas that need our joint action to ensure women are not left behind: https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news-stories\/announcement\/2023\/12\/international-womens-day-2024-invest-in-women-accelerate-progress#:~:text=International%20Women%27s%20Day%202024%3A%20%27Invest,progress%27%20%7C%20UN%20Women%20%E2%80%93%20Headquarters<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investing in women: A human rights issue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Time is running out. Gender equality remains the greatest human rights challenge. Investing in women is a human rights imperative and cornerstone for building inclusive societies. Progress for women benefits us all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ending poverty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The COVID pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, climate disasters, and economic turmoil have pushed an extra <a title=\"UN Statistics\" href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/sdgs\/report\/2022\/goal-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">75 million people into severe poverty,<\/a> since 2020. This could lead to more than <a title=\"Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The gender snapshot 2023\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/digital-library\/publications\/2023\/09\/progress-on-the-sustainable-development-goals-the-gender-snapshot-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">342 million women and girls living below the poverty line<\/a> by 2030, making immediate action crucial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Implementing gender-responsive financing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Due to conflicts and rising fuel and food prices, recent estimates suggest that 75 per cent of countries will <a title=\"End Austerity: A Global Report on Budget Cuts and Harmful Social Reforms in 2022-25\" href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/world\/end-austerity-global-report-budget-cuts-and-harmful-social-reforms-2022-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">curb public spending by 2025<\/a>. Austerity negatively impacts women and crowds out public spending on essential public services and social protection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shifting to a green economy and care society<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The current economic system <a title=\"Feminist climate justice: A framework for action\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/digital-library\/publications\/2023\/11\/feminist-climate-justice-a-framework-for-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exacerbates poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation<\/a>, disproportionately affecting women and marginalized groups. Advocates for alternative economic models propose a shift towards a <a title=\"Unpacking the care society: Caring for people and the planet\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news-stories\/explainer\/2023\/11\/unpacking-the-care-society-caring-for-people-and-the-planet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">green economy and care society<\/a> that amplifies women\u2019s voices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supporting feminist change-makers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Feminist organizations are leading efforts to tackle women\u2019s poverty and inequality.
