SI Sunderland’s Executive News

in

SI Sunderland decided a short while ago to stop having separate Business Meetings as they were poorly attended. So to keep members informed have developed an Executive Committee Newsletter to keep them up to date about items discussed at our meetings. Any queries can be raised on an individual basis with the relevant Officer or at Supper Meetings. So far it has been well received. One member said: ‘A concise Newsletter which covers all points discussed in Executive meetings. I feel it keeps members better informed than having a Business Meeting. It is always useful to refer to if you want to be reminded of information. The way forward in 2022 in a modern and approachable SI Sunderland!’

You will have heard of the amazing 7,000 mile coastal walk that is being carried out by Brian Burnie for his Daft as a Brush charity. However, you might not be aware that, during the journey, SI Sunderland member, Cheryl Finlay has been with him on his walk every step of the way.  On Saturday, 19 September, Cheryl and Brian accompanied by SI Sunderland members past and present walked back into her home town of Sunderland from Seaham seafront to Sunderland Glass Centre.  Welcomed by The Mayoress of Seaham Linda Willis, the socially distanced walkers were joined by past member Tania le Marinel and current members President Rosemary Jenkinson, Joan Downs, Pat Suckley, Vi Stoker, Pat Howe, Anne Brown and of course Cheryl. Cheryl has been part of this remarkable fundraiser from the outset.  Since 2018, she has attended meetings to source Bluebell, the bus

At September’s supper evening, President Kath Tuddenham was delighted to introduce Dame Vera Baird QC, as our after dinner speaker. As well as several guests from Clubs across the Northern Region, we also had the pleasure of welcoming Regional President, Shirley Hallam. Dame Vera spoke about her new role of Victims’ Commissioner of England and Wales and the importance of providing support to victims of crime, in a judicial system where the focus is primarily on the defendant.

SI Sunderland President Kathleen Tuddenham and long-standing member and previous (twice) president Suzanne Brown were interviewed on 4th September by Jayne Middlemiss for BBC Radio Sounds programme. Please use the link below to listen to them – they are true stars! The presenter Jayne says “Wow”” time and time again, after listening to Kath and Sue’s stories and realises Soroptimism was probably one of the first feminist organisations in the world.

“Our Vision for the Future” Once again, I am honoured to be standing here tonight as your newly elected President. Before I mention my programme for the year, I must say what a wonderful time we all had at our 80th Charter Year Celebration at the Grand on 23rd March and wish to place on record our thanks and appreciation to our Immediate Past President Megan and her planning team for making it the success that it was. My theme for this year “Our Vision for the Future” not only embraces some of my chosen speakers, but it also reflects another very important area. Our new members are the future of our club.  New members – new ideas to move us forward, and I will certainly be looking to them, a number who have recently joined us, for them to fully participate and to put
