Sutton Coldfield EXPO<\/h3>\n

September 2019<\/p>\n

Members took the opportunity to showcase our International project and raise funds at this year\u2019s Sutton Coldfield EXPO held in the town\u2019s centre.<\/p>\n

In partnership with the Purple Community Centre we funded the building of and fully equipped a Health Clinic on the rubbish dump \u00a0in Tondo, Manila, The Philippines. Located next to the post the rubbish dump is home to 20,000 individuals. The Purple Community Fund set up 20 years ago supports around 8,000 people (adults and children) through various programmes including education, food and livelihood \u00a0programmes.<\/p>\n

The clinic is open one day a week and provides health care. Whilst patients present mainly with respiratory conditions, the doctor also provides care for maternity, stroke, diabetic cases.<\/p>\n

One of the livelihood programmes enable the mothers to make various artisan products such as handbags, purses and belts using ring pulls and beaded jewellery is made from the coloured pages of glossy magazines. We offered range of these products for sale and raised \u00a3139.50 which was donated to the running of the Health Clinic.<\/p>\n

Indian Afternoon Tea Party<\/h3>\n

July 2019<\/p>\n

During Bo\u017cena\u2019s visit to our Health Clinic in Tondo, Manila, The Philippines she made some home visits to meet some of the patients who had visited our clinic. Whilst walking round with Tes (Manager of our Clinic) she informed Bo\u017cena that many of the families have little income other than looking for and collecting recyclable items from the rubbish tip on which they lived. She was shocked to hear that many of the families could not afford to buy food and depended (for 4 days each week) upon scavenging the rubbish bins outside restaurants and fast-food outlets for food which could be recooked and eaten. As a result many of the children and parents had intestinal (parasitic) worms which were causing further health problems including sickness and diarrhoea and weight loss. Having reported back to members Taj offered to donate the funds raised (\u00a3550) from her Indian Afternoon Tea to cover the cost of a deworming project for both children and parents. By including parents this helped prevent contamination and return of the worms.<\/p>\n

Coffee morning to raise funds for Cancer Support Centre<\/h3>\n

29 June 2019<\/p>\n

The sun shone on members today as we gathered at the home of one of our members. Joan opened up her home and garden this morning and members provided a range of stalls, raffle, tea, coffee and cakes together with Taj\u2019s Samosas.<\/p>\n

President Jackie had nominated the Cancer Support Centre in Lindridge Road, Sutton Coldfield as one of this year\u2019s charities. The Centre supports both those individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer as well as their family and carers. Support is given both during and post-treatment.<\/p>\n

Offering the opportunity to catch-up with friends and have some fun we were delighted to raise \u00a3565.55<\/p>\n
