SI St Austell & District

The Eden Project

St Austell & District is the only club in Cornwall.  We have 45 members with 4 linked members.

We are well supported in our projects by our families, friends and other service clubs and the wider local community.
Locally we support as many causes as we can with awareness and fundraising.

We lobbied for the provision of a family interview room at the police station and the provision of a second Women’s refuge in the county. We support the Women’s and Men’s Refuges. We have close links with both Little Harbour, the Children’s Hospice at Porthpean and the Merlin MS Centre. We take out Residents of a local Residential Home for coffee, cake and a chat every month.

We are proud of our Bursary scheme through which we have made financial awards to 33 local young women to support their further education.

In recent years we have supported Shelter Box, RNLI, Mermaid Centre, Cornwall Air Ambulance, The Invictus Trust (young persons’ mental health charity) Kernow Young Carers, Penhaligan’s Friends’ (support for bereaved children & families) Local library, Women’s Centre, St Petroc’s (homeless) Three Bays Wildlife Group and the Red Box Project which supplies free sanitary products to schoolgirls. We have been taking part in the annual Marine Conservation Society Beach clean and survey since 1997.

Overseas, as well as supporting SIGBI and SI projects we have given financial support to young women volunteering to work developing countries, the education of a girl in the Philippines, a school for orphaned girls in Kenya; support our linked member manufacturing sanitary products in refugee camps and through KIVA micro loans to women entrepreneurs overseas.

Our Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at Porthpean Golf Club; we have interesting speakers and social events.

We support International days such as International Literacy Day where we have a stand at Lanlivery Steam Rally giving away books; The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against women with a collection at a local supermarket of non-perishable food and other items which are passed on to local refuges. To celebrate International Women’s Day we hold an Unsung Heroine Awards Evening.
