Taunton is the county town of Somerset. The town name derives from “Town on the River Tone” – or Tone Town. Famous Taunton landmarks include Taunton Castle, which incorporates the Museum of Somerset and The Castle Hotel, and Somerset County Cricket Club’s County Ground. The Taunton Flower Show, described as “The Chelsea of the West”, has been held annually in Vivary Park since the 19th century.
Our Club was chartered in July 1938. We are a friendly, lively Club whose members enjoy combining social activities and friendship with helping transform the lives of women and children. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at The Old Bear Restaurant, Taunton. The evening starts with supper before the business meeting. On some months we may also arrange a social event beforehand and on others we will welcome an after-dinner speaker.
The Club engages in diverse projects and fundraising events to support the Soroptimists’ vision. One of the principal ways we support our local communities is through our Swimathon Weekend, held in February each year. Since its inception in 1988, the Swimathon has raised over £677,000 for various local charities. We have run three Skirting Science STEM events, designed to promote science and engineering careers to girls.
Internationally, Taunton Club supports a little girl in Ghana to attend school regularly through SOS children’s villages. We have friendship links with Townsville in Australia, Jamestown in Barbados and Zwolle in Holland.
