SI Thames Valley had a fascinating trip to the Breast Cancer Now Research Centre in London, whose Tissue Bank we support. We visited three labs with talks from scientists working on various aspects of breast cancer development, diagnosis and treatment.
We heard of progress towards a more personalised choice of treatment for individual patients. They are focussing on developing a blood test (liquid biopsy) to help identify which drug will benefit a person most. Less invasive than a traditional biopsy, it could potentially be used for diagnosis, and monitoring during treatment. They are also looking at what makes tumours spread.
It felt like an exciting place where you were seeing real “cutting edge” work that will make a vital difference.
