{"id":566,"date":"2018-12-10T17:46:18","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T16:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/thames-valley\/?page_id=566"},"modified":"2022-05-17T10:55:59","modified_gmt":"2022-05-17T09:55:59","slug":"london-chilterns-soroptimists-in-the-face-of-suffrage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/thames-valley\/london-chilterns-soroptimists-in-the-face-of-suffrage\/","title":{"rendered":"London Chilterns Soroptimists in the Face of Suffrage"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Soroptimists from all over the UK were encouraged to add their images to The People\u2019s Picture \u2013 the\u00a0Face of Suffrage on display on the concourse at Birmingham New Street Station from November 15th to the 14th December, the day women voted for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">For more information about the project please see<strong class=\"\">\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/thepeoplespicture.com\/thefaceofsuffrage\/\">www.thepeoplespicture.com\/thefaceofsuffrage\/<\/a><\/strong> \u00a0 We are proud that 2 Members of SI London Chilterns Region are represented on the montage \u2013 Irene Cockroft from <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/london-greater\/\">SI Greater London<\/a> and Rose Simbo from <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/thames-valley\/\">SI Thames Valley<\/a> \u2013 what a great way to raise the profile of Soroptimists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This is the text that was submitted with Irene\u2019s photo entry:<\/p>\n<div class=\"\"><strong class=\"\">Irene Cockr<span class=\"\">of<\/span>t<\/strong> is a Member\u00a0 <span class=\"\">of<\/span> Soroptimist International Greater London, London Chilterns Region since 1997. \u00a0 She is an expert on women\u2019s\u00a0 <span class=\"\">suffrage<\/span>\u00a0in the UK \u2013 \u00a0exhibition curator, author and lecturer. Irene\u2019s inspiration in studying women\u2019s history was her great-aunt,\u00a0 <span class=\"\">suffrage<\/span>\u00a0artist Ernestine Mills (1871-1959) who worked in many mediums including highly-skilled enamel-on-metal. Mills was a founder member\u00a0 <span class=\"\">of<\/span>\u00a0Soroptimist International\u00a0 <span class=\"\">of<\/span> Greater London, chartered in 1924.\u00a0\u00a0 Irene urgently encourages women to make use\u00a0 <span class=\"\">of<\/span>\u00a0our vote, which was hard fought for by brave women and to take every opportunity to march for women\u2019s rights as the women before us have \u2013 and as she continues to do!<\/div>\n<p class=\"\">This is the text that was submitted with Rose\u2019s photo entry:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong class=\"\">National Trust celebrates\u00a0 an inspirational Soroptimist: Rose Simbo <\/strong>As part of this year\u2019s celebration to mark the centenary of women first achieving the vote in Britain, The National Trust is not only commemorating the lives of powerful historical women. It is also telling the story of inspirational women working in the community today.\u00a0 SI Thames Valley nominated their member Rose Simbo for her work setting up the Kori Charity in Sierra Leone, to which many Soroptimists throughout the country have sent contributions of donations of all kinds. At a special meeting in the Orangerie at the National Trust\u2019s Cliveden in Taplow, Berkshire the nominees were invited to speak about their achievements. These nominees were very varied; from founders of new charities, of mental health groups, from marathon runners to one woman who had rowed around England for charity. Each gave a short speech on her work and members of SI Thames Valley, who were there to support Rose, were delighted to have a special publicity spot in Rose\u2019s speech as she highlighted how Soroptimists rally round to support her whenever they can. The meeting ended with a torchlight walk through the grounds to see an exhibition which was then opened to the general public featuring all the nominees involved and which is still on show.
