The Latin term Soroptimist is widely interpreted as meaning &#8216;the best for Women&#8217;\u2014an ideal Soroptimists work to achieve in every sphere of their lives. In Tunbridge Wells we actively support local community projects aimed at enabling young women achieve their full potential through education and self-empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Poems should be on the subject &#8216;2020&#8217;. Open interpretation of this theme will cover significant events that affected your life. The Latin name Soroptimist is best interpreted as \u2018the best for Women\u2019 and Soroptimists have continued to strive to achieve the \u2018the best for women\u2019 in every sphere of their lives. Here in Tunbridge Wells they support many issues and campaigns which aim to help young women in their future lives and careers through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities with a focus on fundraising for local community projects.<\/p>\n<p>The Barbara Bradford Award has been established as a biannual competition in memory of Barbara Bradford, a committed member of Tunbridge Wells Soroptimists and a former lecturer at SOAS, London University. Poems were invited on the subject of VOTE 100, a reflection of the important 100 year\u00a0anniversary of Women being able to vote. The competition was open to all secondary schools in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Three prizes of \u00a350 each were awarded to Sixth Former Francesca from Tonbridge Grammar School for her poem\u00a0<em>100 Years <\/em><strong>Year 9 Prize to Emma also<\/strong> <strong>from <\/strong>Tonbridge Grammar School for her poem\u00a0<em>Be A Rebel, Not a Slave\u00a0<\/em> and <strong>Year 7&amp;8 Prize: Olivia<\/strong> <strong>from<\/strong> Weald of Kent Grammar School for her poem\u00a0<em>They Never Fled<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Highly Commended book prizes were awarded to Torulin and Diya, year 7, Wealf of Kent Grammar School.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Soroptimist Caroline Auckland and Angela McPherson together with Barbara\u2019s husband Ian Bradford visited Tonbridge Grammar School to present the awards and hear the poems read.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;835&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]The judges stated that the standard of work was very high and hoped that all the winners would continue to write and submit their work to other competitions.\u00a0 All of the winning poems highlight women\u2019s past struggles and call for the baton to be taken up by women today since gender equality has not been fully achieved.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=&#8221;848&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Tunbridge Wells Soroptimists meets at 7.30 on the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0Monday of each month Willicombe Park. My husband objects:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo need. No point. Stay out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He doesn\u2019t understand the hope I have<\/p>\n<p>As fresh as the green valleys of home.<\/p>\n<p>I left when I was young. Daughter to wife.<\/p>\n<p>No change, just different rules.<\/p>\n<p>I want to be part of something better:<\/p>\n<p>Joining with women whose hearts are pure,<\/p>\n<p>Like white lilies among the choking weeds,<\/p>\n<p>Fighting to rise up.<\/p>\n<p>Authority, tradition, fear stand against us.<\/p>\n<p>But I am not alone.<\/p>\n<p>I wear my sash and stand tall.<\/p>\n<p>Flashes of purple in the crowd- my kindred spirits.<\/p>\n<p>I am here for my daughter.
