A wonderful morning was spent at Bradley Hall Gardens with members from\u00a0SI Sunderland, SI Tynedale, SI Newcastle, SI Middlesbrough and SI Tynemouth, Whitley Bay & District, all clubs from the East of the SINE (Soroptimist International Northern England) region who got together to support SI Cockermouth in raising awareness and funds for Brain Tumour Research on Thursday 2 August.<\/h1>\n

Members, as ever,\u00a0 were very generous with a huge \u00a3203 raised through donations for BrainTumour Research in memory of two lovely members from SI Cockermouth, who recently lost their lives to this disease.They were the founding President Wendy Dempster and treasurer and past club President\u00a0Diana Clark; both had more than 30 years service each.<\/h1>\n

At our Friendship Coffee morning and Open Garden yesterday we had\u00a0 a super turnout with more than 40 members and friends enjoying chat and coffee together in aid of Brain Tumour Research. It was great to have our friends from SI Darlington, SI Penrith and SI Stockton with us as well as our wider supporters from the community and we raised \u00a3321, which means we have now more than ‘smashed’ our target of \u00a32740 (the cost of research for 1 day).\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

We had chance to walk around the garden (in the rain!) and to stop and reflect for a moment at the white garden which Jane has planted in memory of the two lovely members we lost this year to brain cancer.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The following article is of great interest\u00a0 as SI Cockermouth member, Claire Rawlinson, was inspired to climb several peaks in the Lake District.<\/p>\n

A woman who badly broke her wrist during training for an epic sponsored challenge has finally completed the route – driven on by the memories of two friends who both died after being diagnosed with brain tumours.<\/p>\n

Claire Rawlinson, of Cockermouth, signed up for the Lakeland 3000s Sunset Challenge, a 24-mile walk which involves 10,000ft ascent, in aid of the Brain Tumour Research charity.<\/p>\n

She climbed Skiddaw, Helvellyn, Scafell and Scafell Pike in 16 hours, raising more than \u00a3820 – despite breaking her wrist whilst training and having to postpone her challenge.<\/p>\n

Claire had to have an operation and a metal plate and six screws fitted into her wrist but was motivated to resume training after the deaths of her friends, Wendy Dempster and Diana Clark, who had both been diagnosed with brain tumours.<\/p>\n

Like Claire, the women were members of the Cockermouth and District Soroptimist group.<\/p>\n
