{"id":79,"date":"2013-01-14T15:15:28","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T14:15:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/warrington\/?page_id=79"},"modified":"2022-05-23T12:54:29","modified_gmt":"2022-05-23T11:54:29","slug":"about-our-club","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/warrington\/about-our-club\/","title":{"rendered":"WHAT IS SOROPTIMISM?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;4464&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<strong>Soroptimist International<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.soroptimistinternational.org\">https:\/\/www.soroptimistinternational.org<\/a>)\u00a0is a global volunteer movement which works to transform the lives of women and girls worldwide. \u00a0It has been around since 1921, so almost 100 years, and there are currently nearly 80,000 members in 124 countries.<\/p>\n<p>What does the name &#8220;Soroptimist&#8221; mean? \u00a0It was created form the Latin &#8220;<em><strong>SOROR<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;, meaning SISTER, and &#8220;<em><strong>OPTIMA<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;, meaning BEST. \u00a0 The name Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as &#8220;The Best for Women&#8221;. \u00a0 Thus, as our name suggests, we work to create the best for our sisters, that is to create opportunities to educate, empower and enable women and girls to seek out and reach their potential,\u00a0through projects which support<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Human Rights and the status of women<\/li>\n<li>Fostering International goodwill and understanding<\/li>\n<li>Education<\/li>\n<li>Health<\/li>\n<li>The Environment<\/li>\n<li>Economic and social development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We aim to be a global voice for women through Awareness, Advocacy and Action<\/strong>, and our goals are\u00a0aligned to the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goals:<\/p>\n<p>Soroptimists work internationally, nationally, within regions and locally. With speaking rights with a number of UN organisations and partnerships with other organisations throughout the world our work has ranged from lobbying against landmines, providing fresh water for villagers in developing countries, and to improve birthing in Papua New Guinea, increasing the survival rate and health of both women and babies. \u00a0The current international project &#8211;\u00a0<em>\u201cOpening Doors to a Bright Future<\/em>\u201d &#8211; is the Soroptimist International (SI) President\u2019s Appeal, 2021-2023, officially launching 1 October 2021.\u00a0 Headed by SI President Maureen Maguire, 2022-23, the Appeal, now part of the broader, recently established Soroptimist International Foundation, springs from the learnings and success of many of the SI Appeals that have gone before; uniting Soroptimists, Clubs, Unions and the five Federations, with the aim of delivering tangible benefits to some of the world\u2019s most marginalised women, girls, and their communities.
