It runs from 25<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0December, Human Rights Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">In support of this campaign, the United Nations Secretary-General\u2019s &#8220;UNiTE by 2030&#8221; initiative calls for global action to increase awareness, galvanise advocacy efforts and share knowledge and innovations to help end all types of violence against women and girls. In 2023, the UNiTE campaign theme is <strong>Invest to Prevent Violence against Women &amp; Girls<\/strong>. Soroptimists and UNWomen&#8217;s focus is on Tech-facilitated gender based violence against women and girls. <strong><em>What is that?<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Technology-facilitated gender-based violence is any act that is committed or amplified using digital tools or technologies causing physical, sexual, psychological, social, political, or economic harm to women and girls because of their gender. These forms of violence are part of a larger pattern of violence against women, occurring online and offline, including intimate<span style=\"color: #ff6600\"> image abuse<\/span>,<span style=\"color: #ff6600\"> doxing<\/span> (revealing personal information), <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">trolling<\/span> (online harassment) and the sharing of <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">deepfake images<\/span>. It also encompasses <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">misogynistic hate speech<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">efforts to silence<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff6600\">discredit women<\/span> online, including threats of offline violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Digital violence can exacerbate offline forms of violence\u2014including sexual harassment, stalking, intimate partner violence, trafficking, and sexual exploitation\u2014through the use of digital tools like mobile phones, GPS and tracking devices. For instance, traffickers often use technology to profile, recruit, control and exploit their victims.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Read more about it at UN Women\u2019s https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/what-we-do\/ending-violence-against-women\/unite<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">What can you do?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Read about the <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/16-days-of-activism-against-gender-based-violence\/2023#:~:text=The%20global%2016%20Days%20of,th%20December%2C%20Human%20Rights%20Day.\">UNiTE<\/a><\/span> Campaign and share the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/what-we-do\/ending-violence-against-women\/faqs\/tech-facilitated-gender-based-violence\">FAQs<\/a> about gender based abuse on your social media to spread the word using hashtags and knowledge.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Understand the facts about the new <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-children-and-adults-to-be-safer-online-as-world-leading-bill-becomes-law\">UK Online Safety Act<\/a><\/span> enabling OFCOM to stop and penalise online platforms who fail to control content and access to personal data online\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Share #16days info and images you see online, in your place of work, school, local community to raise awareness of the campaign and enable awareness and action<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Put a poster up enable information sharing using the QR codes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Wear orange, gather to talk about how parents, teachers, leaders, councils and governments can harness technology&#8217;s use for good and empower individuals to stand against online and offline gender based abuse<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Challenge the negative influences of technology when you witness it, help create a world where everyone is treated with dignity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Shift all digital conversations at every change towards respect and equality\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Look at what your local Soroptimist Club are doing and join them on their\u00a0quest for change.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Soroptimists will advertise the need for action and take action nationally and internationally.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Locally we will meet up on 25th November at <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Cowey Sale, Walton on Thames at 10.30am to walk and talk and then unite hands in solidarity<\/span><\/strong>, we invite you to join us. You might also see our flag flying in Weybridge beside Monument Green and the messaging we are sharing on a placard underneath over #16Days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Soroptimists around the globe engage widely as advocates against abuse, violence, oppression and discrimination.
