President Denise is President for our 81st year.<\/h4>\n

Widnes Soroptimists had their inaugural meeting in February 1944. The charter followed in July making 80 years of service\u00a0 last\u00a0 year. We aimed high, and, aimed to raise \u00a35000 for a Pink Tuk-Tuk for the Rosie – May Project below. So far we have raised almost \u00a34000. This was a fantastic achievement for Past President Sheelagh and our club members. President Denise would like to continue this fundraising so that we can reach the \u00a35000 target. Our main fundraisers for this is our bingos. We will keep updated with details on the website and our Facebook page.<\/p>\n

To mark this special year we have decided to aim high!<\/p>\n

We would like to raise \u00a35000.00 for the Tuk tuk project below:<\/p>\n

Think Pink Tuk Tuks!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Rosie May Foundation was founded 12 years ago by Rosie May\u2019s mother, Mary Storrie. Mary, from Nottingham did this in response to the overwhelming donations received by the public after their daughter, Rosie, was murdered.<\/p>\n

Seeking solace, following Rosie May\u2019s death, her parents holidayed in Sri Lanka. It was the year a devastating Tsunami hit the country.\u00a0 This inspired the Foundation\u2019s first project, the Rosie May Home for girls, for children who had lost parents in the tsunami in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

A tragic UN report in 2016 found that 90% of women in Sri Lanka had suffered some form of sexual harassment while using public transport.<\/p>\n

The Rosie May Foundation set up a project to provide highly visible pink tuk tuks in Sri Lanka.\u00a0 Driven by single parent mums as a safe taxi service for over 300 women and girls weekly on their journey to work, school, for hospital appointments etc.\u00a0 At the same time generating a sustainable income for their families.\u00a0 \u00a0 Soroptimist International of Widnes plan to raise \u00a35,000.00 this year which will be sufficient to buy a pink tuk tuk, so desperately needed.<\/p>\n

The UK version \u2018Think Pink\u2019 project stems from this initiative. Aiming to recruit more females into taxi driving services across Nottingham and Derby.thinkpinkdrivers.uk or follow them on Facebook<\/p>\n
