We continue to work with local schools with our ongoing project with pillowcase dresses.
The schools send us their completed dresses and we send to where they are needed. We have an excellent link with our daughter club SI Salisbury, one of whose members, Teresa Wells, runs the charity EdUKaid and supports schoolchildren in Tanzania. We sent out 26 dresses and 5 pairs of shorts in November 2018 made by schoolchildren from Churchers in Petersfield and Mountbatten School in Romsey. and they were very well received.
Teresa says, ‘Children in the remote town of Mikindani in southern Tanzania were queuing down the street to receive the clothes. One year on and we are still seeing children proudly wearing them. We hope to bring out more next year.’
We have previously sent the dresses to SI Banjul who have distributed them in the past, and we also sent them funds for flip flops and underwear to complete the outfits.
We call this project, Girls4Girls but have had to extend it to read ..and Boys.. since some of the boys were interested enough in the project to include boxer shorts.
This year Churchers School in Petersfield Is keen to help and we are hoping that Wildern School in Hedge End and Westgate School Winchester will also come on board next year.
As part of their previous involvement, Barbara Jeremiah, who looks after this project in SI Winchester along with Pat Abbott and Caroline Dale, presented Churchers school with a book on African Textiles.
