Focus on Homelessness in Winchester
This year we found out more about the largely hidden problem of homelessness in Winchester and, through the Silent Auction and Women Walking Winchester events, raised over £12,000 for four agencies which support the homeless and vulnerably housed in our city. These are:
- Trinity Winchester (www.trinitywinchester.org.uk)
- Winchester Churches Nightshelter (www.wcns.org.uk)
- Emmaus Hampshire (www.emmaus.org.uk/hampshire)
- Winchester Women’s Refuge

● GOLD project in the Gambia
GOLD stands for Guiding Overseas Linked with Development (GOLD). This scheme allows Girlguiding UK members aged between 18 and 30 to take part in community development projects overseas. Vanessa Ellis, a local Guider, has been selected for the first GOLD trip to The Gambia and will travel there in September 2012. We gave Vanessa £100 to buy equipment to take with her. On her return she told us about her experiences and how she had used our donation. We were impressed with how much she has achieved with a relatively small sum

St Katherine’s School (Uganda) Scholarship
This year we completed our 5-year commitment to this project. We worked with St. Swithun’s School in Winchester on this project. The Diocese of Winchester has close ties with the Lango Diocese in Northern Uganda and has pledged support to their clergy as the district emerges from a 20-year war with the Lord’s Resistance Army. We are providing a 5-year scholarship to a local girl, Miriam Alum (pictured), so that she can complete her secondary education at St Katherine’s School in the diocese.
