The Smiling School – a Friendship Link Project

We heard recently from our Friendship Link SI Kisumu in Kenya of the progress that has been made at the Smiling School – a project we supported from afar.

Our Friendship Link Club approached us for financial support when they wanted to improve the studying facilities for pupils in Standard One at the school. The pupils were using makeshift benches fixed too far from the tables, which strained their arms when writing. The children went down on their knees to work in writing lessons.

In 2015, working with the management of the school, Programme Action Officer Dolphine Anyango of SI Kisumu developed a proposal for the purchase of desks and recommended text books for the pupils. They approached SI Winchester to ask if we could help and we were pleased to agree to support this project. We carried out a number of fundraising activities and in February 2016 we were pleased to send some £321 which was a great help towards the total of £406, with which 57 textbooks and 10 desks were purchased.

We are now in discussion with SI Kisumu about the next stage of their work at the Smiling School. Watch this space for updates on this great Friendship Link joint project!
