Over the past few weeks we have been promoting our latest fundraiser which was held on 23 October at St Swithuns School. We were delighted to have Mayor Sudhakar Achwal supporting us along with former alumni from St Swithuns, Soroptimists, Rotarians and parents.<\/p>\n

The evening raised \u00a31000, half will go to the charity Lost Chances for Children of Subpostmasters (www.lostchances.co.uk), which seeks to redress the chances taken from the families of subpostmasters \"\"<\/a> caught up in the scandal. The other half will support Winchester Soroptimists charitable projects in the local area, including the local refuge, homeless shelter, sponsorship of Winchester girls rugby, and more.<\/p>\n

The ITV drama “Mr Bates vs the Post Office” catapulted the Post Office Horizon Scandal into the spotlight last year, highlighting the many years of injustice and trauma experienced by sub-postmasters across the country. Despite this and the subsequent enquiry, many sub-postmasters are still waiting for compensation, and the fight for justice continues.<\/p>\n

This is particularly close to home for the club as the two presenters are members of the Winchester club and have been involved for many years on the Horizon Post Office scandal, being portrayed in the ITV series \u2018Mr Bates vs the Post Office\u2019.<\/p>\n

We listened to presentations from Barbara Jeremiah JP MSc and Dr Kay Linnell OBE, who have both been working with sub-postmasters and campaigning for justice. As members of the Justice for Postmasters alliance and accountant respectively, Barbara has been involved for over 20 years, and Kay over 14, in seeking redress for those affected.<\/p>\n

It appears that the way forward is to lobby MPs to advocate for restitution and continue in the battle to get compensation for victims, as well as highlighting systemic flaws and working to hold those responsible to account.<\/p>\n

The evening was hosted by Winchester Soroptimists \u2013 Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement of women working together to transform the lives of women and girls through education, empowerment and enabling opportunities. The organisation has general consultative status at the UN Commission on the Status of Women and works to improve lives at home and overseas (www.sigbi.org\/winchester).<\/p>\n
