A brilliant reason for celebrating<\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

On 21 June 1921,\u00a0 a group of women met at the Hotel Oakland in San Francisco (USA).\u00a0 They formed a Members Committee in order to launch the world\u2019s very first Soroptimist International Club.<\/p>\n

Did they realise back then how enormous the network of Soroptimist clubs would become?\u00a0 \u00a0Probably not that day, but by 1926, Mrs Fox-Pitt, founder member of the first Soroptimist International Club in the UK was able to say:\u00a0 \u201cI do not think I am being over optimistic when I predict that in a few years\u2019 time there will be a Soroptimist Club in every town and city of importance in Europe and America.<\/p>\n

Now, of course, there are many Soroptimist International Clubs on every continent.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So throughout 2021 we, Soroptimist International Great Britain & Ireland \u2013 Sigbi, our Federation \u2013 together with Soroptimists around the world, celebrated 100 years of Soroptimist action.<\/p>\n

Women from our Bright Past<\/h2>\n

Throughout 2021, we celebrated Soroptimists past and present.\u00a0 The ‘100 4 100’ Campaign identified over 100 successful women who deserved special mention.<\/p>\n

A Memorial Statue linking our Bright Past and Brilliant Future<\/h2>\n

Our National Federation, Sigbi, commissioned a statue to commemorate 100 years of Soroptimism. It is now installed in the National Memorial Arboretum<\/a><\/p>\n

Planting Trees for a Brilliant Future<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Trees that are nurtured and loved last a long time \u2013 just like our Soroptimist International organisation.<\/p>\n

Putting trees on the map<\/h3>\n

During 2021, trees were planted throughout the Soroptimist International universe.\u00a0 By the end of of the project in April 2022, over 104, 000 trees had been planted by Soroptimists in the member countries of SIGBI! See where they are here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/h3>\n

SI Woking and District marked the Soroptimist centenary by dedicating a tree<\/a> in Woking’s renovated High Street.\u00a0 \u00a0Woking Mayor, Councillor Liam Lyons unveiled a commemorative plaque next to a beautiful silver birch.\u00a0 We already have a tree in Woking \u2013 sponsored jointly by SI Woking and Woking Lions \u2013 in Jubilee Square.<\/p>\n

We also contributed \u00a3100 towards the Trees for the Downs project.\u00a0 The Southern Region\u00a0 is sponsoring 100 – hopefully disease-resistant – \u201cNew Horizon\u201d Elm trees. They replace some of the historic trees lost to\u00a0 Dutch Elm Disease. They will help to maintain a healthy ecosystem in the Downs, because they will give food to butterflies and other insects.<\/p>\n

Special Celebratory Events and Exhibition<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Soroptimists got together at the House of Lords for a celebratory reception in early October 2021<\/p>\n

Many Clubs put on special events.<\/p>\n
