Violence against women – inside and outside the home<\/h1>\n

There is growing awareness of the crimes of violence, inside and outside the home.\u00a0 Soroptimists campaign to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.<\/p>\n

We know that violence in the home harms women in particular and causes great distress to families.\u00a0 Woking Soroptimists raise awareness about this locally. We also support Your Sanctuary<\/a>, the charity in Surrey that helps all those who have suffered domestic abuse.\u00a0 The SI Woking special group manages our action in this area.<\/p>\n

June 2025<\/h3>\n

The contact cards we distribute are very popular and more have been printed.<\/p>\n

SI Woking regularly holds an ‘Orange Cafe’.\u00a0 We gather in a local face to raise awareness about domestic abuse.\u00a0 Check the calendar for the next date.<\/p>\n

November 2024<\/h3>\n

Surrey Soroptimists hosted a one-day conference in Winchester to explore the safety of women and girls in Surrey.\u00a0 SI Woking members helped to organise and fund the conference. The event brought together expert speakers and representatives of over 40 organisations in Surrey.<\/p>\n

July 2024<\/h3>\n

From time to time, Woking Soroptimists hold an ‘Orange Coffee Morning’.\u00a0 Members wear orange and engage with members of the public in a local cafe for the morning.\u00a0 The aim is to raise awareness about the shocking frequency of violence against women and girls.<\/p>\n

January 2024<\/h3>\n

SI Woking designed a Contact Card to remind women especially to have emergency numbers to hand at all times.\u00a0 More here<\/a><\/p>\n

September 2023<\/h3>\n

The UK Government support supported a change to the law on public sexual harassment.\u00a0 The House of Commons approved the proposed text.<\/a> After debate in the House of Lords, the new law<\/a> was approved.\u00a0 Its applications means harsher punishment for people who commit the offence<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In 2022, there was a proposal to make ‘downblousing’ a criminal offence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Your Sanctuary<\/h2>\n

Why do Woking Soroptimists help Your Sanctuary?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Formerly the Women’s Aid Refuge,\u00a0yourSanctuary<\/a> has been in Surrey for many years, helping to protect people, especially women and children, from domestic violence.\u00a0 Your Sanctuary offers practical help, including safe places to say and counselling.\u00a0 An especially important part of their work is the Children’s Service, with a trained children’s mental health worker and a trained outreach officer.<\/p>\n

We raise funds and\u00a0 awareness for Your Sanctuary.<\/h3>\n

Our October 2022 fundraiser<\/a> led to a donation of over \u00a3750 to Your Sanctuary.<\/p>\n

We helped Your Sanctuary during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.\u00a0 In April 2020, we gave \u00a3600 to Your Sanctuary.\u00a0 We knew that\u00a0 the restrictions on everyday life due to the lockdown could lead to more domestic violence .\u00a0 So we wanted to help Your Sanctuary to meet the increased call on its services.\u00a0 We also knew there would be less money to spend on essential services because grants have been cut and no fundraising was possible during lockdown.<\/p>\n

We also give practical help<\/h3>\n

The victims of domestic violence need many kinds of help.\u00a0 They not only need psychological, medical and legal assistance, they often need very practical help.\u00a0 They may turn to Your Sanctuary in an emergency and arrive with very few personal belongings.\u00a0 They will have few resources for anything but essential needs.<\/p>\n

So we regularly donate toiletries to be given out as emergency supplies.<\/p>\n
