Walk the Walk <\/a>– helping breast cancer victims<\/span><\/h4>\n

In November 2020, we helped local reast Cancer charity ‘ Walk the Walk’\u00a0 to raise \u00a36,000 by taking part in a virtual balloon race across the Serengeti. Look out for our ‘Soroptimist Woking’ balloons flying high over the Serengeti.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Surrey Young Carers<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n

In May, Woking Lions told us that young carers desperately needed laptops to help them with schooling at home during the Covid-19 crisis, so we made a donation.\u00a0 We were delighted that the money helped two brave youngsters to keep up their schoolwork despite the extra burdens they now have.\u00a0 At the time, Natallie Hoare, Fundraising Manager of Action for Carers Surrey, told us “The laptops you helped us to provide have made doing school work at home easier\u00a0 – they also let them take part in some Zoom social events.”<\/p>\n

Update<\/strong><\/p>\n

Natallie joined our Soroptimist Action meeting in July to tell us more about Action for Carers Surrey and the laptop campaign.\u00a0 The charity has been given 40 laptops so far.\u00a0 They are being given to young carers\u00a0 (some are as young as 5!) because the restrictions have made their lives carers even more difficult.\u00a0 They now give extra help and care at home and <\/em>keep up with lessons.\u00a0 So they get little social contact outside the home.\u00a0 Having a laptop breaks the isolation and lets young carers join in activities, like the videoconferencing get-togethers organised by Action for Carers Surrey.<\/p>\n

How does Action for Carers Surrey help?<\/strong><\/p>\n

They are ‘a friendly voice at the end of the line’ but also offer a wide range of support for registered unpaid<\/em> adult and young carers in Surrey.\u00a0 But the charity believes that there are many adult and young carers who are not registered.\u00a0 That means they can’t get the extra help that could make a big difference to their lives.<\/p>\n

So if you know anyone in that situation, help them to get in touch with a charity like Action for Carers Surrey.<\/p>\n

Woking Soroptimists gave \u00a3170 (made up of Club and personal donations) to Action for Carers Surrey<\/a> in May, and a further \u00a3125 in July 2020.<\/p>\n

In addition, we have given \u00a3100 to Leonard Cheshire Disability in memory of our much-missed and long-serving Soroptimist Joan.<\/p>\n
