Local charity Walk the Walk<\/h3>\n

Acupuncture can bring relief to patients in pain.<\/p>\n

The balloons will fly virtually over the Serengeti Park.\u00a0 There are prizes for the balloons that go highest and furthest.<\/p>\n

Woking Debates<\/h3>\n

The Woking Debates meeting in early November 2020 took the theme ‘Should we all become vegan’.\u00a0 The discussion was both lively and informative.\u00a0 \u00a0As always, things are more complicated than they seem.\u00a0 \u00a0The speaker talked about the burden placed on the planet by the way we eat.\u00a0 We should live within the limits of our planet and that includes what we choose to eat.\u00a0 See the WWF report on Planet-based diets<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0From the nutritional point of view, humans are not all the same and it is important to learn more about what we are eating and where it comes from.\u00a0 Then we can make properly informed choices.\u00a0 To see the debate in full, go to Woking Debates website<\/a> and YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Modern Slavery<\/h3>\n

One of the speakers at our recent national conference, Dr Alison Gardner, gave us facts and figures about modern slavery.\u00a0 There have also been articles about modern slavery in the press these last few weeks:<\/p>\n

An article in the Evening Standard concerned Romanian women trafficked for sex “UK has become a ‘pump’s paradise’ for sex traffickers, senior MP warns as she calls for website ban”. Find the article here<\/a><\/p>\n

Female Genital Mutilation<\/h3>\n

It’s that time of the year again!\u00a0 In some African countries, December-January is the season for traditional initiation ceremonies.\u00a0 This is when boys and girls are considered to be approaching adulthood and certain rituals should be carried out.\u00a0 For girls, this is often Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).<\/p>\n

The Daily Telegraph published a report about Kenya, entitled “Month-long ‘cutting season’ in West Kenya sees an estimated 2,800 girls subjected to FGM’\u00a0 Read the article here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And Global Giving published an update on the campaign led by Rhobi Samwelly in Tanzania.\u00a0 Together with Tanzania Development Trust, we have supported Rhobi’s work to persuade parents and communities to replace the ‘cutting’ (FGM) with non-violent alternatives. Domestic Abuse<\/h3>\n

SI Southern Region has arranged a special meeting by videoconference with the Designate Domestic Abuse Commissioner\u00a0 – more here<\/a><\/p>\n

The government has published news of a month-long campaign ‘Something’s not right’ in response to the rise in domestic violence during the pandemic. Find the details here<\/a><\/p>\n

BBC News published two items on domestic abuse at the end of October 2020.\u00a0 The first was about a chatbot that is being used to help the victims of domestic abuse.<\/p>\n

The second article concerned the winner of the Pride of Britain award.\u00a0 Rebecca Beattie was a victim of severe domestic abuse for five years.\u00a0 But she managed to move on from that experience and found an ethical clothing company.\u00a0 Find these articles here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Exhibitions about women making a mark<\/h3>\n

A new exhibition has opened at the National Gallery.\u00a0 It showcases the early Italian female painter, Artemisia Gentileschi.\u00a0 She is now achieving full recognition as an outstanding artist.\u00a0 The exhibition will continue into next year.\u00a0 Well worth a visit, when lockdown is over!\u00a0 \u00a0More information and booking here<\/a><\/p>\n

And the British Library has an exhibition about the rights women have won since the time of the suffragettes.\u00a0 This exhibition echoes what our eminent speaker, Lady Hale, said at our recent national conference<\/a>.\u00a0 Entitled ‘Unfinished Business’, it also continues into next year.\u00a0 For more information, visit the British Library site here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
