100 years of Soroptimism<\/h2>\n

1951-1961<\/h3>\n

Soroptimist Movement<\/h4>\n

International Headquarters<\/h5>\n

The Soroptimist movement began as a network of clubs.\u00a0 As the years went by, the Clubs were loosely gathered into geographical Federations. But there was no single governing body leading the Association – the headquarters simply changed with each President.\u00a0 This changed in 1952 when a governing body was established.\u00a0 Soroptimist International Headquarters are now in Cambridge, UK.<\/p>\n

National Federation headquarters<\/h5>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Great Britain and Ireland Federation (SIGBI) bought a property in Bayswater Road, London in 1952.\u00a0 No. 63 became the Federation’s headquarters for many years, as well as residential Club for members living outside London.<\/p>\n

Eventually, the Federation’s headquarters moved out of London and No 63<\/a>\u00a0 became a hotel open to all.\u00a0 \u00a0It is still a special place for Soroptimists to stay and meet sisters from other Clubs – and sample the special No. 63 gin!<\/p>\n

Mission and values<\/h4>\n
Service<\/h5>\n

When the Soroptimist movement began, one of its founding values was ‘service’.\u00a0 During the early years, Soroptimists were expected to serve their local community – it was a time when international travel was uncommon.\u00a0 International communications had not yet developed enough to be able to report almost instantaneously on events on the other side of the world.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u2018Soroptimists turn their interests and skills to useful projects in the community,\u00a0the nation and the world<\/em>\u2019.<\/h6>\n

But after World War II the definition of service broadened and deepened.\u00a0 At the 1956 New York Convention, this was Dr Violet Parkes’ call to action:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we have any advantages we should seek obligations rather than rights.\u00a0 If people are homeless, if children exist on a diet below the calorie standard required for health, if there are women who have no chance of elementary education, what is our obligation? \u201c<\/p>\n

Soroptimists had become more aware of what they could achieve by living their mission.\u00a0 At the 1956 Convention in New York, President Mrs Huitt said: \u201cSoroptimists joining hands together have great power in their united strength. if they work together through Service, Friendship, Good Will and Understanding\u201d.<\/p>\n

Service<\/h4>\n

In the 1950s, Soroptimist International became a truly international organisation.\u00a0 \u00a0So service to the community naturally began to be defined in the same way.\u00a0 And in 1954, Soroptimist International asked Clubs\u00a0 to pursue service objectives in defined areas.\u00a0 SI also encourage members to promote international goodwill and understanding and to be active in public affairs.<\/p>\n

In terms of Soroptimist action therefore,\u00a0 members now identified and responded to local, national and international <\/em>concerns during the 1950s.<\/p>\n

Locally<\/em>:\u00a0 housing for the elderly, work with young people (notably to prevent juvenile delinquency) were a strong focus.<\/p>\n

Nationally<\/em>, Club records show growing concern about the economic status of women. One response from the Great Britain and Ireland Federation was to offer scholarships for foreign students to study in the UK.\u00a0 The desire to help women with their education has been a strong focus ever since.\u00a0 In 1975, the national federation (Sigbi) set up the Diamond Education Grant<\/a> to help women.\u00a0 In 2020, Sigbi received 200 applications.\u00a0 80 applicants received funding to complete their education.<\/p>\n

Internationally<\/em>, cooperation with the United Nations deepened.\u00a0 Refugees continued to be a focus for action.\u00a0 \u00a0There was help for refugees abroad: in Austria and in Hong Kong for example. And also at home:\u00a0 \u00a0Agnew House in London and the Ockenden Venture (mentioned in our March 2021 report<\/a>).<\/p>\n

So by the end of the decade, the triple focus of Soroptimists – local, national and international – was firmly established.<\/p>\n

Status of Women<\/h4>\n

The 1950s brought further advancements for women.\u00a0 There was personal progress: for example,\u00a0 the British Nationality Act improved the legal status of women in marriage.\u00a0 Public progress too: in 1952, British Soroptimists recorded that women\u00a0 had more senior roles in government and in diplomacy.\u00a0 More women were recognised in the New Honours List, indicating their greater contribution to public life.\u00a0 Interestingly, the New Year Honours List in 2021 comprised 49% women!<\/p>\n

Modest fashion in working women’s lives<\/h2>\n

The University of the Arts London has published the results of\u00a0 a thought-provoking investigation into what women wear at work.\u00a0 The researchers looked particularly at modest clothing in the workplace.\u00a0 Women wear modest clothing for many reasons, not only religious.\u00a0 Read more about this topic here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Women’s Centre Belfast<\/h2>\n

The Windsor Women’s Centre in Belfast (N.I.) may have to close.\u00a0 Film maker Kathryn Ferguson<\/a> has made a documentary about it.\u00a0 Find out more in this interview<\/a> with The Guardian.<\/p>\n

St Vincent volcano<\/h2>\n

The volcano eruption on the Caribbean islands of St Vincent & the Grenadines is devastating for the people and the country.\u00a0 We know that our sister Soroptimists in Kingstown are working hard to help.\u00a0 Our Federation (Sigbi) – SI Kingstown is a member – has sent \u00a31,000 from the Emergency Relief Fund.<\/p>\n

Domestic Abuse Bill – update<\/h2>\n

How can we better protect women and girls from domestic abuse?\u00a0 Read our info here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The House of Lords has put forward changes to the proposed law.\u00a0 Now the House of Commons will have another debate about it.\u00a0 Update here<\/a><\/p>\n

HeForShe<\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

HeForShe<\/a> is a solidarity movement for the advancement of gender equality.\u00a0 It was started by Elizabeth Nyamayaro of the United Nations.\u00a0 She now leads the movement.\u00a0 \u00a0Ms Nyamayaro strongly believes that equality for women must also involve the full participation of men.<\/p>\n

We Soroptimists share this view.\u00a0 We focus on helping women and girls in difficulty across the world because they often need help now<\/em>.\u00a0 But we know that helping women helps everyone in the family in the long run.\u00a0 And that a better world has to be better equally for women and men.<\/p>\n

Changing the Perfect Picture<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The UK Parliament Women and Equalities Committee has published its report on the perception of body image.\u00a0 \u00a0Woking Soroptimists contributed<\/a> to this inquiry some months ago.\u00a0 Now the Committee has made important recommendations: for example, BMI, the body mass index, used in many medical assessments, does not correspond to the full range of real bodies in the UK.\u00a0 So it is not fit for purpose and should not be used, says the report.\u00a0 The report also says that the government must improve its anti-obesity strategy.\u00a0 Read the full report here<\/a><\/p>\n
