{"id":6003,"date":"2022-02-22T14:53:28","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T14:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/woking-and-district\/?p=6003"},"modified":"2022-04-12T13:28:52","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T13:28:52","slug":"march-2022-ovarian-cancer-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/woking-and-district\/2022\/02\/22\/march-2022-ovarian-cancer-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"March 2022 &#8211; Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month &#8211; Homeless Women &#8211; Soroptimist Trees &#8211; Women in Prison &#8211; Ethel Smyth &#8211; Refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Refugees<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/woking-and-district\/files\/2022\/02\/Flags.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6027 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/woking-and-district\/files\/2022\/02\/Flags-300x130.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We are all concerned about the refugees fleeing from the fighting in Ukraine.\u00a0 How best to help?\u00a0 Soroptimist International Club have a great tradition of helping each other in times of need.\u00a0 Our sister Clubs in Epsom and Salisbury have Friendship Links with the Soroptimist International Club in Lviv (Ukraine) and in Chisinau (Moldova) and they are working very hard to support refugees.\u00a0 So the Soroptimist Clubs in the Southern Region have donated a total of \u00a33,945 to those two Clubs.\u00a0 SI Woking have contributed \u00a3275 to the cause.\u00a0 And of course, individual members are making separate donations to refugee organisations.<\/p>\n<h1>Ethel Smyth<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/woking-and-district\/files\/2022\/02\/Ethel-Smy-2_Dukes-Plaza_March-2022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6021 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/woking-and-district\/files\/2022\/02\/Ethel-Smy-2_Dukes-Plaza_March-2022-187x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ethel Smyth, composer and suffragette, now publicly recognised in Woking!\u00a0 A statue has been place in the modernised Town Centre in honour of this very talented and influential woman. Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woking.gov.uk\/news\/dame-ethel-smyth-statue-stands-tall-dukes-plaza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>Women in Prison<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womeninprison.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women in Prison<\/a>&#8216;s Big Give campaign.\u00a0 For seven days, starting from<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>noon on Tuesday 8th March until noon on 15th March<\/strong>, all donations received through the Big Give campaign of Women in Prison will be matched to have<strong>\u00a0double the impact.\u00a0<\/strong>So, if you donate \u00a310, the charity will receive \u00a320.<\/p>\n<p>With money raised last year, Women in Prison supported more women through the Women\u2019s Centres in Manchester and London, with issues such as mental ill-health, domestic abuse, harmful substance use and homelessness. But with the impact of Covid-19 and cost of living crisis, more women than ever need these services.\u00a0 Give NOW <a href=\"https:\/\/donate.thebiggive.org.uk\/campaign\/a056900002CTiO0AAL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Soroptimist Trees<\/h1>\n<p>Our goal is in sight!\u00a0 Soroptimists have been planting trees since early 2021 to celebrate the Soroptimist International centenary.\u00a0 The goal is to plant 100,000 trees by April 2022, the end of the Soroptimist year.\u00a0 Nearly 95,000 trees have been planted.\u00a0 So we are nearly there!\u00a0 See how we celebrated <a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/woking-and-district\/welcome-to-si-woking\/club-officers\/\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Help for Homeless Women<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/woking-and-district\/files\/2022\/02\/Beverley-Burrows.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6014 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/woking-and-district\/files\/2022\/02\/Beverley-Burrows-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The Salvation Army Housing Association is helping to transform the lives of homeless women in Surrey.\u00a0 \u00a0Our March Social Meeting speaker was Beverley Burrows, Manager of Mulberry House.\u00a0 She told us about the fantastic service offered to women who have fallen on hard times. Mulberry House in Guildford is fully equipped to give 15 women a home for up to two years.
