October Social Meeting<\/h1>\n

SI Woking monthly Social Meetings are always an opportunity for members to socialise in a relaxed atmosphere,<\/p>\n

But the more serious challenges that concern all Soroptimists are never far away.\u00a0 Our collection of store cupboard items to give to Your Sanctuary this month is a reminder that there are always new victims of domestic violence in Surrey.\u00a0 If they leave home in a hurry, they will need help immediately.\u00a0 Woking Soroptimists donate food and toiletries to cover those first, difficult days.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And our speaker, Maggie A Hussein, of the University of Kingston London,\u00a0 brought the plastics crisis into focus.\u00a0 She has a background of music and legal studies, and now specialises in environmental law.\u00a0 Her thoughts on how plastic, hailed as a wonder material when it was invented, has now become a monster difficult to control, led to some lively discussion.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

It is clear now that recycling plastic is not easy to do and it will take global society many, many years to implement remedies and solutions.\u00a0 Ms Hussein held out the hope that the UN’s Global Plastics Treaty will be agreed soon, leading to a more energetic introduction of anti-pollution measures.<\/p>\n

Liaise – Macmillan Coffee Morning<\/h1>\n

We were delighted to support the coffee morning held by Liaise Women’s Group in Woking in early October.<\/p>\n

The coffee and cakes were delicious, and there were Liaise Fashion items on display, to admire, try and buy.<\/p>\n

The event raised just over \u00a31,440 for Macmillan Cancer Support.<\/div>\n

Support for Women from Catalyst<\/h1>\n

This month, we were pleased to see the results of the support that Catalyst gives to women in Surrey.<\/p>\n

Catalyst raised \u00a36116.74 for the Women’s Support Centre, as part of the Big Give Campaign.\u00a0 The money will fund extra hours of help for the centre’s clients.<\/p>\n

And Catalyst funded the New Beginnings Art Awards 2024. This annual art competition is open to women in the community, and those in prison, in Surrey.\u00a0 The Awards encourage and aid women involved, or at risk of being involved in the criminal justice system, to start a therapeutic journey towards sustainable change.<\/div>\n
The 2024 Art Awards were supported by Watts Gallery \u2013 Artists\u2019 Village. The artworks, on the 2024 theme of \u2018Past, Present, Future\u2019 were on show during October at the Watts Gallery.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
