INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY – 2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Three members attended the International Women’s Day event at the Royal Bath & West Showground, joining over 100 women from a variety of organisations and businesses.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was an excellent opportunity to share our Vision & Mission with likeminded women. We distributed our bookmarks depicting happy and not so happy relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n

The four presentations focusing on volunteering, added to interest and thoughts for the future action.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Woman in the Community<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It was with great pleasure that President Elect, Jo, presented a certificate and Orchid to the very special Wendy Bond.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Wendy knits Trauma Teddy Bears which we\u00a0 pass to Police, Social workers, teachers, Refuges and elderly care homes.\u00a0 We have also sent over 100 Teddies to children suffering the impact of war in Ukraine.\u00a0 What a joy they bring!<\/span><\/p>\n

We supported the global 16 days of action against abuse to women and girls.\u00a0 These are just three of the many displays we placed in towns and villages, shops, libraries and even a working mans club!<\/span><\/p>\n

We decorated a Christmas tree in a Sherborne Church.\u00a0 The decoration included baubles in our corporate colour and orange origami shoes .\u00a0 Orange is the global colour representing a brighter future for victims and survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Orange Cafe<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On 25th of the month, or the nearest day if 25th falls at a weekend, we hold our Orange Cafe at the Westland Entertainment Centre, Yeovil from 10a.m. until noon.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have information available, raising awareness of Domestic Abuse and the need to eliminate violence against women and girls. Our colour, orange, reflects the United Nations colour for this issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are there to help but we also enjoy meeting together and knitting squares for our Fidget Blankets for Dementia patients.<\/span><\/p>\n

No idle hands for Soroptimists!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"The HPV (human Papilloma Virus)\u00a0 can cause Cervical Cancer but protection against the disease can be achieved through Vaccination and testing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Women who have not been vaccinated can also be tested – often known as the ‘Smear Test’ .\u00a0 If the test has a negative result, it is unlikely that this woman will develop Cervical Cancer in the following ten years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Raise Awareness<\/span>Do not risk the potential harm because of lack of knowledge<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We were so pleased with the opportunity to attend the ‘Accelerate Action’ event at the Royal Bath & West Showground on March 7th.\u00a0 The event was a celebration ahead of International Womens Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speakers highlighted the advances women have made in taking leading roles in the farming and agricultural communities whilst still having scope for improvement.<\/span><\/p>\n

We were able to network with like minded organisations, sharing ideas and widening the net of people who know about the work of Soroptimist International.<\/span><\/p>\n

Helping to raise awareness we staged displays at the Artspace, Westland Entertainment Centre, Yeovil Library and Sherborne Abbey.<\/span><\/p>\n

We planted Orange Tulip bulbs at Westland Entertainment Centre where we hold our Orange Cafes and will be planting more at locations in Sherborne.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Orange Tulips will be left to naturalise, flowering in the spring reprsenting new beginnings.\u00a0 The colour orange, celebrates women survivors of abuse and their hopes for a brighter future.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Saigon, the students in this photograph were celebrating International Women’s Day by offering flowers for a small donation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here in Yeovil, we will be in the town, offering a gift of a small bunch of Spring flowers to women out and about the town<\/span><\/p>\n

We will be in the Borough, Yeovil, offering Spring Flowers to women out and about in the Town.<\/p>\n

After our excellent pre Christmas lunch at the Pen Mill Hotel, we will not hold any formal meetings until February.\u00a0 The Executive committee will meet via zoom and as always, the notes of the meeting will be circulated to all members.\u00a0 Time for some R&R to prepare for our 2024 activities.<\/p>\n

Members joined by the former Mayor of Yeovil raising awareness of Gender based violence. Each shoe painted orange represents a female who lost her life to domestic abuse in one year.\u00a0 We shared our ‘Loves Me, Loves Me Not’ bookmarks showing strong healthy relationships and highlighting not so healthy traits.\u00a0 Our shoes and posters will now be displayed in the Quedam art centre.<\/span><\/p>\n

We will be very happy to talk about our global efforts to achieve a safe world for women and girls and offer our ‘Love Me, Love Me Not’ bookmarks which tell simply, what is a good relationship and what may be not so good.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Four members accepted\u00a0 very kind invitation from\u00a0Sherborne Food Bank\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>to attend an afternoon tea thanking all the volunteers and organisations that help them.\u00a0 It was a delightful afternoon and an opportunity to meet many involved in supporting the Food Bank, which in turn, supports so many people in great need on a weekly basis.\u00a0 We learnt that at Christmas, an additional delivery is made to ensure that those helped routinely have some Christmas cheer too.<\/p>\n

Three members attended Soroptimist International Convention in Dublin, joining with members from over 60 countries.\u00a0 The theme, ‘Challenge the Future’.\u00a0 With some excellent speakers, the opportunity to meet with members from around the world at social events and to see some of the wonderful sites of Dublin.\u00a0 And of course, the Guinness just had to be sampled!<\/p>\n

One way in which we support our local community is by collecting unwanted jewellery.\u00a0 This is auctioned and the proceeds are donated to the Breast Care Unit at Yeovil hospital, which is under construction.\u00a0 Over \u00a3130K has already been raised in this way.<\/p>\n

On July 11th, a cheque was presented to Yeovil Freewheeleers Blood Bikes.\u00a0 Freewheelers is a group of volunteer motorcyclists who support the NHS by transporting urgent medical items.\u00a0 The value of donations to Freewheelers multiplies tenfold in value to NHS savings.<\/p>\n
