{"id":4768,"date":"2021-07-21T13:52:27","date_gmt":"2021-07-21T12:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/yorkshire\/?page_id=4768"},"modified":"2024-07-01T14:15:25","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T13:15:25","slug":"siyams-female-genital-mutilation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sigbi.org\/yorkshire\/si-yorkshire-anti-slavery-group-overview\/siyams-female-genital-mutilation\/","title":{"rendered":"Female Genital Mutilation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Soroptimists across Yorkshire raise awareness of issues which violate the rights of women and children.\u00a0 Such harmful practices include Female Genital Mutilation and Forced Child Marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What is FGM?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Female genital mutilation (FGM)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a procedure where the female genitals are deliberately cut, injured or changed, but there is no medical reason for this to be done.<\/span><b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>It is illegal in the UK and is child abuse<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FGM is usually carried out on young girls between infancy and the age of 15, although most commonly girls are cut before puberty which is about the age of 11.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is very painful and can seriously harm the health of women and girls.\u00a0 It can also cause long-term problems with sex, childbirth and mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Girls are sometimes taken abroad for FGM, but they may not be aware this is the reason for their travel.\u00a0 They are more at risk of FGM being carried out during the summer holidays, as this allows more time for them to &#8220;heal&#8221; before they return to school.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">137,000 women and girls are living with the consequences of FGM in the UK.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">200 million women and girls worldwide have undergone FGM<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For more information c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lick on the links below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/female-genital-mutilation-fgm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/female-genital-mutilation-fgm\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This page includes two videos.
