Safety: further information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Statistics of online abuse<\/b><\/p>\n<p>According to the Office of National Statistics states around one in five children aged 10 to 15 years in England and Wales (19%) experienced at least one type of online bullying behaviour in the year ending March 2020, equivalent to 764,000 children.<\/p>\n<p>Being called names, sworn at or insulted and having nasty messages about them sent to them were the two most common online bullying behaviour types, experienced by 10% of all children aged 10 to 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three out of four children (72%) who had experienced an online bullying behaviour experienced at least some of it at school or during school time.<\/p>\n<p>The most common specific types of cyberbullying 10-15 year olds experience include:<\/p>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Any online bullying behaviour<\/td>\n<td about you were sent to you<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">10.1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">You were left out or excluded from a group or activity on purpose<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">6.1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Rumours were spread about you<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">5.3<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Nasty messages about you were passed around or posted where others could see<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">3.3<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Threatened you on purpose<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">2.1<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Made or tried to make you give them money or other things<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">0.4<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">Other nasty things happened to you<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\">1.9<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><b>Online abuse experiences when using popular APPs<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A study from the UK anti-bullying organisation Ditch the Label found of the young adults surveyed had experienced cyber bullying:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>42% Instagram <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>37% on Facebook<\/li>\n<li>31% on Snapchat<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>9% on Twitter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on survey data, including previously unseen analyses from the Oxford Internet Survey about adult online abuse in the UK in 2019:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>between 30-40% of people have seen <b>online abuse<\/b><\/li>\n<li>approximately 20% of people have personally been targeted by abusive content <b>online<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Online risks can be categorised under the 3C\u2019s. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Content<\/b>: being exposed to illegal, inappropriate or harmful material, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sexual imagery and content<\/li>\n<li>Violent content<\/li>\n<li>Extreme content or opinions expressed<\/li>\n<li>Biased or skewed content<\/li>\n<li>Inappropriate advertising<\/li>\n<li>Scams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Contact:<\/b> being subjected to harmful online interaction with other users, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being bullied or harassed including stalking and trolling<\/li>\n<li>Personal information can be copied and shared<\/li>\n<li>Being groomed and coerced into sharing sexual content<\/li>\n<li>Pressured into a behaviour which may cause the young person or vulnerable adult to harm themselves<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Conduct:<\/b> one\u2019s own personal online behaviour that increases the likelihood of, or causes, harm to others for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sharing explicit sexual material<\/li>\n<li>Bullying or harassing another person<\/li>\n<li>Downloading music or films illegally<\/li>\n<li>Providing biased or misleading information and advice<\/li>\n<li>Gambling<\/li>\n<li>Designing online financial scams<\/li>\n<li>Hacking into accounts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How risks can be managed<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Things which need to be in place include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ensuring there is open communication between the child or young person and their parents or carers;<\/li>\n<li>ensuring privacy controls are in place on all of their devices, mobiles, tablets, kindles, laptops and the television.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Empowering children to report, delete or block inappropriate sites or images;<\/li>\n<li>ensuring the young people support each other;<\/li>\n<li>talking to the children and young people about what they are doing online, regularly checking their devices to ensure they are using them appropriately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, it is important that children and young people are given time to use the internet and have the confidence to manage risks appropriately.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, it is vital that adults, especially vulnerable adults, are protected and measures which should be in place include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ensuring all passwords are strong;<\/li>\n<li>installing security software on all devices;<\/li>\n<li>protecting wireless network so no-one living nearby cannot access it;<\/li>\n<li>keeping all devices updated;<\/li>\n<li>not opening attachments unless it is from a trusted source;<\/li>\n<li>consider what information you share in profiles;<\/li>\n<li>watch out for scams and phishing;<\/li>\n<li>keep a watch on all your accounts;<\/li>\n<li>immediately report identity theft;<\/li>\n<li>think carefully before posting photographs;<\/li>\n<li>checking a
