About our club

SI Surrey Hills is your local branch of Soroptimist International. We are a busy club, working on our projects to educate, empower and enable women and girls, both here and across the world.

A club by women for women

Being a Club member gives you a sense of helping others, by working on projects which directly help women and girls both locally and throughout the world.  You’ll hear talks which educate you, you’ll attend regional meetings and our annual Conference, where over 1,000 women gather to debate and learn, and you’ll make friends locally and globally as you meet other Soroptimists at the worldwide Convention held every four years.

Soroptimist International gets the benefit of your skills and enthusiasm.   And most important of all, you will ensure that women and girls across the world get the support and recognition they deserve through our links with the UN.

Club information

Our Club is based in Godalming, Surrey but our members are also from Farnham, Guildford, Cranleigh, Haslemere, Hindhead and all points in between!

Who we are

We are a small Club but with mighty ambitions. Not only has one of our members become Federation President but we were also nominated recently for a Best Practice award for one of our projects. We want to do more! Women and girls deserve more!

When and where we meet

We meet formally twice a month: once by Zoom to enable us to have speakers from all around the globe and once in person at the Godalming Baptist Church Hall, GU7 1BA (preceded by an optional meal at Prezzo opposite). But we also meet to carry out project work and at our Regional meetings (three times a year).

Club history

We were founded in 1959 by one of the first female dentists, at a time when women had to choose a career or family. Pat remained a member for over 50 years until her death. Women in the UK and beyond can now have both a career and marriage but sadly, an education beyond the age of 12 remains barred to girls in Afghanistan. These injustices are why the world needs Soroptimists.

Friendship Links

Soroptimist Clubs maintain friendships with Clubs all over the world. SI Surrey Hills is linked in this way with SI Ribe (Denmark), SI Freiburg (Germany) and SI Esperance (Trinidad & Tobago). We’re particularly pleased that SI Esperance won the Delegates Choice Award for their project on online safety for girls at the SIGBI Conference 2025.

What’s it about?

If you ask a Soroptimist what they get out of it, their answers would all be different! We’re individuals and we all have opinions!! But we’d all agree that Soroptimism gives us …. a purpose – working for women and girls; global reach – a voice at the UN; opportunities to give practical help – we work on projects, we lobby, we make a difference; and friendship.
