Friends and members of Soroptimist International joined Burnley club member Mrs Pat Heap at her home for a convivial coffee morning to raise funds for the president’s charities.   The guests enjoyed friendly chat as they savoured home made cakes and biscuits with their coffee or tea.

Even though her house was on the market, Mrs Heap had offered to host a coffee morning to start off the fund-raising for new president and friend, Kathleen Howarth.   She joked that if it sold before the event, the new owner would have to agree to fulfil the charitable commitment.

A Bring and Buy stall staffed by Muriel, a friend of the Burnley soroptimists, generated much interest.  The goods offered for sale ranged from attractive hand made bracelets and home grown orchid cuttings to eggs from ”Happy Hens” which had been bought by a club member as they were about to end their existance as worn out, caged battery hens.  The hens were now enjoying a free range life and rewarding their new owner with tasty eggs.

President Kathleen thanked everyone for supporting the event and said special thanks had to go to the hostess Pat who, fortunately, had not been required to exchange contracts on her home before the Coffee Morning but which HAD, by the day of the event, been sold.

A raffle won by Miss Joyce Moore boosted the profits to more than £175 which will go to the local Riding for the Disabled initiative.
