Greening Bournemouth

Following the club’s participation in the Citizens’ Panel, which aimed to enhance Bournemouth town centre, two members of the club took the lead on an initiative called ‘Greening Bournemouth’. The first phase was a Community Day of Action on July 30th to replant the 8 planters in Beale Place, after an extensive exercise linking in with many individuals and organisations. Twenty-five volunteers arrived to help plant the lovely healthy plants produced at Cherry Tree Nursery and paid for by Bournemouth University. We had gardening advice from Stephen at Garden Buddies and Anona at DWT; refreshments were provided by Tesco. Maintenance of the planters will be undertaken by 8 local businesses using ‘kits’ SIB donated with watering cans, gloves, trowels and thank you/ instruction leaflets and five club members took part on the day. Jessica Toale MP, coordinator of the Citizens’ Panel and helper on the day, said “What a fabulous feat you have pulled off! I instantly feel uplifted by the area after seeing all the flowers in it, and it was great to see so many people interacting with the event and coming just to hang out!” A very successful outcome; off to green more of Bournemouth!

Following the club’s participation in the Citizens’ Panel, convened by Jessica Toale MP and Millie Earl Head of BCP Council in 2025, two members of the club took the lead on an initiative called ‘Greening Bournemouth’. The first phase was a Community Day of Action on July 30th to replant the 8 planters in Beale Place; phase two took place on October 3rd in The Triangle, an area adjacent to the town centre. We organised the funding, selection and purchase, collection and delivery of the plants and a team of volunteers (including 4 Soroptimists) to do the work on the day. We also got agreement from three nearby businesses to maintain the planters thereafter providing them with watering cans, gloves and trowels along with instruction leaflets as we had done in Beale Place. Jessica Toale MP, who participated on the day was once again very pleased with the outcome, and has posted on her social media, thanking SIB for our leadership. Another very successful outcome; off to green more of Bournemouth!

SI Bournemouth once again staffed a hydration station at the Bournemouth Run on Sunday October 11th 2026 to raise funds for the club. Many SI members, family and friends turned up to hand out bottles of water to the more than 5000 runners who were very appreciative. Having learned from the past years’ experience, we asked for more tables and made sure we had plenty of helpers on the day to ensure smooth running of the event. We were also asked to help on another station and were able to provide support there increasing our income on the day. Our contribution was highly valued and the excellent organisation praised. We raised £750 for club funds that will be used to support several of our current projects, increasing our impact.

Our speaker on September 21st was a Trustee and highly experienced member of the Brownsea Open Air Theatre (BOAT). She gave us a very interesting talk on the history of BOAT which formed in 1964. Denise has directed 5 productions on Brownsea Island and 2 at Canford as well as acting in plays and being involved with the costumes. She brought a selection of amazing costumes and hats, all made by local volunteers, which were joyfully modelled by members, as our photos show!
