About our club

(SI) Soroptimist International Glasgow City

A club by women for women, where everyone is heard

SI Glasgow City, part of Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland, has been supporting women and girls in the City of Glasgow and beyond for almost 100 years.  We welcome women to join us who want to help make a difference to the lives of others. Our programme of meetings is varied, covering issues that affect women and girls, but we also enjoy friendship and social events. Members come from across the city and from a wide range of backgrounds

Our meetings are held fortnightly, alternating between evening and afternoon. Afternoon meetings are usually in Ibrox Church Hall, while evening meetings in Glasgow Caledonian University can also be accessed online. In January and February we meet on Zoom. This flexibilty means that everyone can attend some meetings, if not all.

Club programme

Speakers come from a range of organisations, usually connected to areas we support or want to learn more about. Regular updates on their work are provided by the staff from Tomorrow’s Women Glasgow. We try to vary the programme to keep it interesting and members regularly suggest topics. During the year we have Orange Cafes which are an opportuniy to highlight the issue of Violence Against Women and engage others in conversation about it

Club history

Soroptimists have been meeting and working in Glasgow for almost a century. The current Club was chartered on 5 December 2010, following the decision to merge Glasgow West and Glasgow Central, Members of Glasgow South subsequently joined when they decided to close and earlier this year we were joined by members from Paisley as well as some new ladies. As a group we continue to work on local, national and international projects.

Officers

We have joint Presidents. a Secretary and Treasurer. Every member is part of group – Programme Action, Social and Fundraising, Syllabus, IT and Website and Membership. We encourage members to contribute according to their skills and interests and to ensure everyone is included and involved

Current projects

This year we continue to support Tomorrow’s Women Glasgow, who work with women in the justice system. A recent coffee morning raised funds for Marie Curie as well as being a lovely social get together. Other topics to be covered include groups working with refugees, victims of trafficking and people who are homeless.
