A Small Gift That Changed Everything
I had just given birth to my baby girl. She was beautiful, perfect, and I loved her instantly. But she was unwell. Unlike other mothers who were able to take their babies home, we were told we had to stay in hospital, and I remained by her side day and night. Exhausted, anxious, and running on almost no sleep, I felt myself unravelling.
As the days passed, I grew more distressed and more tired. I hadn’t washed properly, and I felt hopeless and helpless — entirely focused on my daughter’s fragile condition and with nothing left for myself.
Then a nurse handed me a small bag of toiletries, donated by the Soroptimists. It seemed such a simple thing: shampoo, soap, a flannel, a toothbrush and toothpaste. Yet in that moment, it felt like a lifeline. I was allowed to use the shower room, and I stepped inside clutching that little bag of kindness.
Under the warm water, surrounded by the comforting scent of Molton Brown, I felt myself slowly returning. Twenty minutes later, I emerged refreshed, restored, and more myself than I had felt since giving birth.
I felt empowered. Clean hair, clean skin, and suddenly the strength to face the world again. I sought out the consultant and asked for a full update on my daughter’s condition. I felt confident enough not to be brushed aside, and together we made a plan. My daughter improved — and she was discharged the very next day.
I will never forget the impact of that small bag of toiletries. While I was thinking only of my daughter, the Soroptimists were thinking of me. Their kindness changed my day, changed my outlook, and arguably changed the course of my daughter’s recovery.
