Making our City Safer

The rape and murder of Sarah Everard at the hands of a serving police officer in March 2021 was a watershed moment for our small Club. This was different in impact and scale to previous events and drove us to take action to make our city safer for women and girls

Every winter since 2022, we have carried out annual Nighttime Street Audits, where we walk the city streets at night in small groups, checking for streetlights that are not working and for dark areas of the city where there are no lights, or lights are obscured by foliage and reporting issues.

We worked with our local Pubwatch and agreed with them we would audit awareness of ‘Ask for Angela’ with pub, club and bar staff across the city. In small groups, we visit licensed premises to check whether bar staff are aware of the codeword and how to react appropriately.

Our latest campaign has been to visit barber shops, gyms and sports centres to invite them to display printed ‘Good Guys’ stickers (with tips for men to make women feel safer) on mirrors and in gents’ toilets and changing rooms.
