Beach Cleaning at Seasalter and Swalecliffe
Our coastal and creek environment is at the heart of our communities in Faversham, Herne Bay and Whitstable and important to our economic and social wellbeing. Working in partnership with Plastic Free Whitstable, members of Whitstable and District Soroptimist International Club volunteer to clean stretches of the beach regularly throughout the year.
Collecting mainly plastic rubbish in to bags supplied by Canterbury City Council, is a very satisfying activity. It's not just about rubbish left on the beach, it's more about rubbish that has been washed ashore with the tide. By removing the rubbish, it is not washed back in to the sea and potentially in to the food chain. This also protects marine life and birds from injury caused by being ensnared by waste fishing line and all sorts of other rubbish.
Finishing after about an hour, the team go to a local cafe, providing a lovely social activity and community connection. Walkers on the beach want to engage and the cafe owners just love hosting the tea, coffee and chat after each cleaning session.
On average Club members carry out six beach cleans per year, with around six members taking part each time, filling rubbish sacks that weigh up to three kilograms. This means Club members have cleared approximately 432 kilos of rubbish from the beach over the last four years!
