Programme Action
Programme Action A look back during the AGM at what the Club has achieved over the past year.
Contact the elderly
A major new project was started in 2008 to provide tea for elderly, lonely people every two months. This project requires drivers, member’s homes to provide the tea and sometimes support for drivers. The process requires the hostess to make sandwiches when the event is held in their house and other members provide the cakes. Drivers contact the elderly people and arrrange to pick them up.
Although our numbers have not grown over the year due to a number of reasons, our teas are always enjoyable occasions for those able to attend. A programme of 6 teas throughout 2009-2010 has been drawn up and hostesses agreed.
Licking Lassa Fever
Members continue to enthusiastically provide jewellery for this project. Envelopes are regularly filled and taken to Regional meetings. Some Smartie tubes have also been filled and members have supported other member club events to raise money.
Presidents Charity
Holme Towers Hospice, Penarth was supported by a number of events including a social event held in Anne Morgan’s home who is also this year’s High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan.
Ann showed us her Inauguration outfit and spoke about the role of High Sheriff in the past and modern times.
The proceeds from International night were shared between the Internal Charity and Holme Towers. Christmas decorations were also made and donated by two club members for the Presidents Charity.
Cluster Bombs
S.I. Bridgend took a very active role in this campaign – with some members lobbying Minister Milliband and signing a petition .Six members attended a lobbying and campaign meeting at the Sennydd on 22nd October 2008. A cluster bomb film was shown to members in May.
Friendship link with S.I. Karachi was formed with the express purpose of supporting young girls to continue their education. We have committed ourselves to supporting five girls in a year. I.e. £100. To date we have raised more than £400 largely through the sale of cards made and donated by club member Rayner.
Peace Poem Competition
At the start of the year all schools in the Bridgend area were sent details of our Peace Poem Competition. Some schools entered and were successful as a consequence. This supported Licking Lassa Fever.
Christmas Shoe Box Initiative and Christmas Trees in Nolton Church
Twenty shoeboxes were beautifully wrapped and filled by members and taken to Talbot Green for distribution. Once again we took part in decorating our tree in Nolton Church along with many other organisations in the town.
Cape Verde
Club members are very committed to supporting the Cape Verde project. When ‘our girl’ Jocilene become pregnant and her sister took her place at school, members took the decision to support both girls in the future.
