Welcome to our Region!

Welcome to SI London Anglia

Welcome to Soroptimist International of London Anglia Region, which extends from the Thames in Eastern England to the Wash in North Norfolk.

As part of an international organisation Soroptimist International, in our corner of England, we have ten clubs between King’s Lynn in the north and Southend in the Thames estuary – Great Yarmouth on the east coast and East London on the western fringe.

If you live anywhere in this region contact us and one of our clubs will be pleased to welcome you! Across the region, we have clubs in Cambridge, Chelmsford, Colchester, East LondonEnfieldGreat Yarmouth, Ipswich, Kings LynnNorwich, and Southend-on-Sea and District.

This is a diverse region. Our club members bring a wealth of experience and expertise to our region’s meetings. Women from all walks of life, from town and country, suburb and sea-side, all with the common aim of keeping Soroptimism alive – because it’s worth it!

Clubs work hard to improve the lives of Women and Girls, in this country and across the world – supporting our refuges, campaigning, and working on our local, national and international projects.

Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International is a worldwide service organisation for women. We are committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide.

If you are interested in becoming a member but don’t live near a club, we also have Associate Membership of Soroptimist International – search our Federation website for details.

On Saturday 28th November 2020 we held our Regional Council Meeting which celebrates Human Rights.  Each Club gave a short Tribute and it was heartfelt.  This is the 3rd year we have done this and it really brings us together.

It was an excellent meeting yesterday with our key speaker, Dame Vera Baird, Victims’ Commissioner, giving us an insight into her role, resources, and priorities in making change so that Victims of all events are included in the process, kept up to date, treated with respect and, whether the crime ends up in court or not, understand the issues.
Few crimes are victimless. Be they burglaries, personal physical attacks or events of serious intentional or accidental deaths, the resulting trauma can significantly and negatively affect the victims’ lives. Only by treating victims inclusively can they feel their life can move on. Those who suffer from domestic abuse and their children are also victims, usually traumatised by their experiences of going to court. It is time for change.
This is a massive task for the Commissioner who has few powers, a small budget and very limited resources, but Dame Vera Baird is nothing but ingenious when it comes to persuading those that make the law, police it and work within the judicial system.  Thank you Dame Vera for giving us your time
