Soroptimists Celebrating the Power of Women Volunteers on International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development

By Dr Pamala Proverbs

We Soroptimists are supreme volunteers. We give our time, talent, and funds to causes that we hold dearly, especially those that are critical to the wellbeing, hopes and dreams of women and girls. It is therefore with deep pride that we celebrate the International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development, observed today December 5. This day provides us with a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable individual and collective contributions of women volunteers worldwide. Remarkable women, driven by their passion for creating positive change, that are playing a pivotal role in promoting economic and social development within our communities.  For example, in Barbados the Sister Forward Academy initiative, that helps prepare women and girls for the world of work has been recognized by SIGBI as a model program promoting economic development in the country.

Unsung Heroes

Soroptimists are behind the scenes of countless initiatives and projects, from climate change, water and sanitation to gender-based violence and literacy. In all these areas and more there stand a Soroptimist who dedicates her time, skills, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. These women volunteers are the unsung heroes, the driving force behind the progress we see in various economic and social sectors.

Empowering Women Through Volunteering

One of the most inspiring aspects of International Volunteer Day is how it empowers women to take charge of their roles as change-makers. Women often face unique challenges, but through volunteering, they gain the confidence and skills needed to overcome obstacles and shape their own destinies. Volunteering fosters leadership qualities, strengthens networks, and opens doors to new opportunities for women.  We challenge each Soroptimist today to encourage another woman to become a volunteer.

Thanks to all Women Volunteers

As we celebrate International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development, we take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to the countless women volunteers who tirelessly work to build a brighter future. Your dedication and selflessness inspire us all to be more active in our communities and to join the global movement for positive change. Today, therefore, we celebrate our global network of Soroptimist sisters as you continue to shape a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous future for all.
