Places to Visit in Cardiff: An October Guide for  Soroptimists

Cardiff is a city that feels friendly, manageable and culturally rich, making it an excellent host city for a Soroptimist conference. October is also a wonderful time to visit Cardiff; there is plenty to explore across the conference weekend. So, whether you’re coming early, leaving late or just in Cardiff for the two days you might find this page useful. There’s definitely something here to suit every pace and interest.

Cardiff offers an ideal mix of history, creativity, green spaces and great places to eat and unwind — perfect for a group of women visiting together.

Cardiff Castle (18 minutes walk from Holland House Hotel)

Right in the city centre, Cardiff Castle is impossible to miss and well worth a visit. With Roman walls, a Norman keep and lavish Victorian interiors, it offers a fascinating glimpse into Welsh history. Even a short walk into the entrance area (that’s free!), or around the grounds or a guided tour can be fitted neatly around a busy schedule.

National Museum Cardiff (14 minutes walk from Holland House Hotel)

Just a short walk from the centre, this elegant museum houses impressive art collections, natural history exhibits and works by Monet, Turner and Welsh artists. Entry is free, making it an easy and rewarding stop.

Bute Park (21 minutes walk from Holland House Hotel)

Often described as Cardiff’s “green heart”, Bute Park sits beside the castle and is especially beautiful in October. It’s perfect for a peaceful stroll, informal conversations, or a breather after a busy day — with riverside paths, arboretum trails and café along the way.

Roath Park & Lake (40 minutes walk)

Slightly further out, Roath Park offers a calm, leafy escape with a large lake, botanical gardens and a charming conservatory. Ideal if you’re looking to slow the pace and enjoy some fresh air.

Cardiff Bay (10 minutes taxi ride, 60 minutes walk from Holland House Hotel)

If you have a free afternoon or evening, Cardiff Bay is well worth visiting. Once a busy dockland, it’s now a scenic waterfront area with striking architecture, public art, shops and restaurants. Mermaid Quay is ideal for an evening meal or a drink overlooking the water.

Here you will find:

  • The Senedd (Welsh Parliament) – open 7 days a week
  • Pierhead Building – a neo-gothic red brick building
  • Wales Millennium Centre – national home for the performing arts. One of the top UK cultural attractions
  • Cardiff Bay Barrage – stunning sea views
  • Techniquest – Science Discovery Centre
  • Norwegian Church Arts Centre – one of Cardiff’s most iconic buildings

Shopping in Cardiff: A Perfect Autumn Escape

Late October is a brilliant time to visit Cardiff for a shopping trip. The city is lively but not overwhelming, the weather is crisp rather than cold, and the streets and arcades take on a cosy autumn atmosphere. It’s ideal for a group of women looking to shop, wander, eat well and enjoy Cardiff at a relaxed pace.

Cardiff’s compact city centre makes it easy to explore on foot, blending modern shopping centres with historic Victorian arcades, independent boutiques and traditional markets.

Modern Shopping

This is Cardiff’s main shopping centre. You’ll find all the well-known high-street brands, beauty stores, accessories, and plenty of cafés.

  • Queen Street & Capitol Shopping Centre (9 mins walk from Holland House Hotel)

Queen Street is Cardiff’s busiest shopping road, with a mix of fashion, budget finds and fun pop-in stores. Capitol, at the lower end, adds a slightly quirky feel with independent shops and places to browse vintage and novelty items.

The Famous Arcades – Cardiff’s Hidden Gems

One of Cardiff’s biggest shopping delights is its network of beautiful Victorian and Edwardian arcades — perfect for October wandering if the weather turns cool or drizzly.

  • Castle Quarter Arcades – Atmospheric and character-filled, ideal for independent fashion, gifts and artisan products. (16 mins walk from Holland House Hotel)
  • Royal Arcade – Cardiff’s oldest arcade, charming and refined, great for quality gifts and local designers. (16 mins walk from Holland House Hotel)
  • Morgan Quarter – Elegant and spacious, home to jewellery shops, fashion boutiques and the world’s oldest record shop. (17 mins walk from Holland House Hotel)
  • Wyndham Arcade – Smaller and relaxed, with lovely cafés and wine bars — ideal for a mid-shopping pause. (18 mins walk from Holland House Hotel)

In late October, these arcades feel especially cosy, with warm lighting, cafés tucked into corners and plenty of unique finds.

Markets & Local Finds

Cardiff Market (17 mins walk from Holland House Hotel)

A must-visit for any shopping trip. This historic indoor market is brilliant for:

  • Welsh food and treats

  • Handmade gifts and quirky souvenirs

It’s perfect for browsing without rushing, and a great place to grab lunch or sweet treats.

Vintage, Charity & Alternative Shopping

For groups who enjoy hunting for something different and a slightly longer walk at around 22 mins walk from Holland House Hotel:

  • Roath & Albany Road – Great charity shops, vintage stores and independent boutiques. (A short taxi ride)
  • Jacobs Antique Centre – A treasure trove of antiques, homeware, books and curiosities.

A Change of Scene: Cardiff Bay

If you fancy a break from the city centre, Cardiff Bay is a lovely option in October. This is a 40 minute walk from Holland House Hotel but only 10 minutes in a taxi. Mermaid Quay offers smaller shops, gift stores and lifestyle brands, all set around the water. This area is definitely worth a visit if you have time.
