The first meeting of the new year challenged the Hertford and District Club to consider What is Art?
We had a very lively and enjoyable evening with much member participation. In line with the 2016/17 theme of ‘Women and the arts’ members were asked to ‘Think about some things they regarded as ‘art” and bring up to 3 items.
The evening began with a powerpoint presentation of women across the world working in different ‘art’ forms – from architecture to painting; decorative glass to book illustration; singing to theatre; poetry to fashion design; film to choreography.
Members, working in small groups, whole-heartedly discussed the ‘items’ they had brought, which ranged across the ‘arts’ but the most interesting and fascinating part of the evening was members’ willingness to share the personal story behind their chosen item.
