Elimination of Violence Against Women

16 Days of Activism

In 1999, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The day was chosen in honour of the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic, three highly visible figures whose murder on November 25th, 1960, was part of the story of overthrowing a dictator. These 16 Days of Activism denounce domestic violence, rape, and sexual harassment, as well as political violence targeting women.

In fact, on the 25th of every month feminists across the globe “orange the world” in an attempt to raise awareness that the world needs to be bright, positive and orange for women who are 50% of the human race, instead of the bleak grey and dark black of desperation that it is at present.

The 16 Days of Activism end on 10th December, Human Rights Day with the firm conviction that Women’s Rights are Human Rights.
