Club history

Welcome to our club history

In these pages, you can read about the formation and development of SI Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District and find out more about the activities of our club and the causes we have supported since our foundation in 1947. Some things have changed a lot but there is much that remains consistent across the years, not least the commitment to service, resilience, creativity, generosity and passion of the members. Whatever the decade, Soroptimists were – and are –  a force to be reckoned with in promoting the best for women and girls.

A note on sources

A range of sources has been used to write this history, including:

  • Whitley Bay club minutes 1953-1989
  • A pamphlet published in 1973 entitled “The Soroptimist Club of Tynemouth 1946-1973
  • Records kept by current members

The minutes of  Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District Club, and Tynemouth club 1946-1983 are deposited in Tyne and Wear Archives and access to these has not been possible due to the restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. As soon as it’s possible to do so, these records will be used to add to the club’s history.
