Louise Layland
(1960-2020)
Our much loved friend and fellow Soroptimist passed away, peacefully, on Friday 29th May 2020 after privately battling cancer for some time. She had been a member of SI Wigan for 12 years and served as our President in 2012-2013, and on both the PAC and Social Committees for many years.
Louise was a dedicated Soroptimist who embraced every aspect of our mission. She was ‘committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong and peaceful communities world wide.’ She was a born organiser, natural leader, champion fundraiser and friend to all in our club, and indeed clubs in the region and overseas. Nothing was ever too much trouble for her and she gave of her time freely and compassionately. Her presence and support brightened up any event or day.
She will be fondly remembered for her good company and driving skills, in particular, on Club visits to Toulouse and the International Conference in Malta. At every event locally, nationally and internationally,
Louise was always both welcoming and welcomed. Alongside her husband Peter, she also hosted many annual quizzes in aid of Wigan and Leigh Hospice , DIAS and The Brick. They were always a huge fund raising success and full of good humour, sustained by hot pot suppers.
I am sure that our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, Peter and her family at this difficult time.
They intend to hold some sort of memorial event, shared with her fellow Soroptimists, in the not too distant future.
Louise, you will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
