As is the custom each year, clubs meet up on a regional basis near the festive season to exchange ideas, share experiences, renew and make new friendships and of course raise some funds! This year we had a very successful craft stall supplied by our talented members!
The Annual Charity Fair was held on the Green, Beaumaris on Sunday 28 August 2022. It was again, very well organised by Bangor Rotary and very well attended. We had two stalls – one for the North Wales Society of the Blind which raised £180 and a Healthy Treat/Chocolate Tombola which raised £121 for St David’s Hospice Many thanks to all who contributed towards both stalls.
Vicki welcomed Adrian Lloyd Jones, Living Landscapes Manager / Welsh Beaver Project Manager, North Wales Wildlife Trust to our meeting via Zoom recently who gave an extremely interesting and informative talk about 30/30 and the re-introduction of beavers to Wales. He explained that the 30/30 project is the aim of having 30% natural habitat in the UK by 2030. He was also passionate about re-introducing beavers to Wales and explained the benefits this would provide to our countryside. Following on from the release of the male beaver, ‘Barti’, and his son in late March, the mother beaver has now been reunited with her family group. The whole beaver family is now together at Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust’s beaver enclosure within Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve. Cors Dyfi: beaver receiver! | North Wales Wildlife
Jenny has been selling cuttings of her wonderful plants in aid of one of our charities Ty Gobaith. Many of us, together with friends have enjoyed a welcoming cuppa and fantastic tour of Jenny’s beautiful garden. Many thanks Jenny for your hospitality and visit to your amazing garden. Donations so far amount to over £150 – brilliant!
On Tuesday evening 21 June members met up for a coffee and a chat on the picturesque Bangor Pier. It was a great opportunity for everyone to relax and catch up with friends and enjoy the lovely warm summer’s evening. A great time had by all.
Our annual AGM was held in Parc Menai with some members joining by Zoom. Reports from Programme Action (Sian), Treasurer (Joan) and Secretary (Lin) followed. Several nominations were made for charities to support in 22/23 and we will do our best:- Carer’s Outreach, Gorwel, North Wales Wildlife Trust, St David’s Hospice, Ty Gobaith, North Wales Society for the Blind and Blind Veterans. On Saturday 26th March for one hour between 8:30 and 9:30pm members were invited to switch off non-essential electric lights for the WWF Earth Hour and unite with millions of people around the world in a global display of commitment to tackle urgent environmental issues and protect our planet. Earth Hour reminds us that even small actions can make a big difference. When we make changes in our own lives to reduce our footprint, we inspire those around us to do the same. Our second speaker in March was Emma Quaek from the Dementia Carers Support Group and manager of Dementia Actif Gwynedd. In 2014, she was offered the opportunity to work with people with dementia, which she accepted as her mother was suffering from dementia and Emma had no idea how to deal with this and support her mother. She learnt that one way to reduce the risk was to keep active. She said that dementia is not only about losing your memory but is a disease that attacks different parts of the brain and this takes a lot of understanding. Music is also very important or learning a new skill such as a language or instrument. Our first meeting on 1st March we have Keri McKie from St David’s Hospice who came to talk about the new hospice at Holyhead which opened a year ago today. As we celebrate St. David’s day it seemed appropriate. Keri looks after events and ‘Hospice Heroes’ and has been in the job for ten years which, she said, showed how much she enjoys what she does. She showed a short film about the Hospice on Anglesey which, she said, has seen 70 people enjoying the facilities in that time. Keri also encouraged members to think about volunteering for the hospice and said there were many varied opportunities to do this.
