As the club year comes to an end, we say huge thank yous to all members who have contributed to the  Club’s success. As the Club year comes to an end, the members of Soroptimist International of Beverley and District were delighted to be able to present a cheque for £1257.56 in support of the vital work of the Macmillan Nurses team at Castle Hill Hospital. This magnificent total was raised at the recent Fashion Show held at Tickton. Sue Spence, Macmillan Nurse with the Urology Department, joined Club members, to receive the cheque on behalf of the Nursing team.  She described some of the work that the nurses undertake in supporting prostate cancer patients from diagnosis to end of life, and through cancer and beyond. They are there to help patients understand the treatments they will receive and cope with the psychological, sociological and physiological impacts that they will experience. On a cold and blustery evening, members of SI Beverley & District turned out in full strength to delver the Spring Fashion Show.  There were tasks for all in providing a welcome for our 130 guests with wine and nibbles and a chance to win the beautiful raffle prizes.      The collections on show were provided by four local fashion boutiques – Collections of Angel Square, Molly Browns of Wednesday Market, Beverley Dresser of North Bar Within, and Estelle of Willerby. Soroptimists were among the glamorous models who presented clothes for all occasions.  Behind the scenes was a model of organisation and timing.      President Jenny welcomed the brave souls who had beaten the weather to be here, and promised a show with something for everyone and for every social event. To celebrate  International Women’s Day (March 8th) President Jenny had asked members to think about women who had influenced them or had made a strong contribution to improving women’s lives.   Several members spoke about a memorable woman of the past 100 years PRESIDENT JENNY  spoke about ALICE BACON the first Yorkshire Woman MP. Alice was MP for Leeds North East from 1945 -1970. She entered the House of Lords as Baroness Bacon in 1970. She was born and lived in Normanton all her life. LIZ L recalled  RUTH NOBLE  the Founder of Beverley & District Soroptimist Club . We celebrated our 50th Anniversary in 2017. She was Headmistress of Beverley Girls High School. ANDREA  told us about  DAME CECILY SAUNDERS  born in 1918.  She qualified as a Nurse, a Social Worker and in 1930 as a Doctor. She founded the Hospice Movement. SUE B had research on FREDA MAY

Fashion Show On 16th March 2018 the Fashion Show will be held at Tickton Village Hall from 7pm. Tickets are £10 each to include wine and nibbles. The items on show are from local shops –  Estelle of Willerby, Collections of Angel Square, Beverley Dresser, Molly Browns. Once again, members of SI Beverley and District have been baking items for Home-Start Goole.  They were able to contribute fruit cakes, jams, biscuits and chutneys to add to the Hampers and Christmas Fair stall. ‘We had lots of visitors, the school choir sang and the cakes and jams went down well – please thank the ladies who donated them.’ The Drop-In day was clearly a success in both publicising the work of this tremendous organisation and in raising much needed funds to continue their valuable work.  Trained volunteers support young families in those early, and sometimes stressful, days as new parents.  In addition, the Goole group have begun english language classes for some of  the many new members of the community.  In this small quiet community there is at least one school where  80% of its children  do not have english as their first

Lovely letter of thanks from the Christmas Tree committee. Subject: Christmas Tree Festival thanks Can I thank everyone who helped to make this year’s “Festival of Christmas Trees” such a success? Thanks to our sponsors, the people who donated trees (65 in all), the School Choirs who sang (9 in all) and the Community Choirs who sang (5 in all) Thanks to the catering staff at St John’s Burlington  who provide refreshments throughout the “Festival” The two weekends were a great community event and altogether around 70 different groups were involved i.e. schools/uniformed organisations/churches/charities and local businesses. I’m pleased to report that the profit for the “Festival” was £2,751-49. That is divided 60% to St Catherine’s Hospice and 40% to Rotary local charities. None of that would have been possible without the help and co-operation of so many people – thank you to you all. John

Once again, Soroptimists braved the wintry weather to support the Millars’ Club Christmas Celebrations There were gifts to be wrapped so that each child and young person will receive a surprise parcel at the Christmas Party. Happy Christmas to all.
